Living in Knowle: the local area guide

The appeal of Knowle is quite obvious. Excellent road links, brilliant educational institutes and an intoxicating village charm entice professionals and families to venture into this rural hub on the outskirts of the West Midlands Conurbation.

Belonging to the borough of Solihull since 1974 and resting within the ancient county of Warwickshire, Knowle has managed to carefully preserve its characteristic charm. This has also aided its image as one of the most prosperous locales in the Midlands, which naturally led to an increase in house prices as many wanted to take advantage of Knowle’s delightful offering.

If you wish to live here, you’ll find that venturing into central hubs such as Birmingham or London can be done so effortlessly (either via train or car). And, when it comes to purchasing a property, a number of quaint detached and semi-detached properties await to be called home.

Demographics

The 2011 Census for the ward of Knowle suggests that a little under 11,000 people call the quaint village home. In the village, under 5000 households exist, of these 82% are owned either outright or with a mortgage and 71% are made up of families. This is hardly surprising given the outstanding schools that the village boasts.

47% of residents are also in employment, working in the professional, managerial and technical sectors. A majority of these employed residents commute to work.

Education

The village of Knowle boasts two outstanding schools, ones which have drawn eager parents and young families into the area.

At primary level, Knowle Church of England Primary Academy caters for children aged 3 to 11 years. When Ofsted inspected the institute back in 2012, they gave the school a prestigious ‘Outstanding’ rating. Aside from the stellar remarks and praise received from the education authority, the school also boasts first-rate pupil attainments. 92% of students achieve Level 4 or above in maths, reading and writing, and 48% achieve Level 5 or above.

The attractive statistics continue at secondary level with the Arden School, which offers secondary and post 16 education at a remarkable standard. When Ofsted reviewed the institute in 2008, they also awarded the school an ‘Outstanding’ rating. Like Knowle CofE, Arden boasts exceptional pupil achievements in both GCSEs and A –Levels – ones which surpass the national average!

Transport

With the M42 a few minutes away, commuters can access Birmingham with ease and as the village sits on the A4141 road, the town of Solihull can also be frequented conveniently. With such attractive road links, it’s hardly surprising that many find themselves settling in Knowle indefinitely – especially as Knowle boasts rural charm, which is hard to find in most conurbations.

Though no railway station is present in the village, one can be found in Dorridge, Hampton-in-Arden and Birmingham. In fact, Birmingham International Railway Station, which is also home to Birmingham International Airport, sits 10 minutes away from the village and boasts frequent connections to London Euston, whereas the airport hosts numerous flights to destinations worldwide.

In the village itself, most rely on their feet or bike to get around, and numerous buses ferry locals to the surrounding villages and towns.

Amenities and shopping

The delightful village is home to a number of wonderful shops. Knowle is also known for its exquisite selection of eateries, attracting folk from nearby villages. However, Knowle is by no means a fashion hub, so those seeking designer items will have to venture into Solihull or, better yet, Birmingham to keep up-to-date with the latest seasonal trends. The Bullring is one admired venue where you can shop until you drop.

Knowle also hosts numerous clubs for its residents, from church groups to football and scout groups. There’s truly something for everyone! Apart from its fantastic range of local clubs, Knowle boasts plenty of green spaces, scenic walking routes, and sports facilities.
