Prime Location Birmingham Area Guide
The City of Birmingham is located in England’s West Midlands and has been one of the United Kingdom’s most important industrial cities for centuries. It is also the second biggest in the United Kingdom after the capital, London. Nowadays, Birmingham has developed into a commercial centre, especially for events and conferences and continues to be a hugely significant city in the UK.
Birmingham has produced some very well-known people in Britain’s history. Some notable “Brummies” include John Cadbury the founder of the world’s 2nd biggest confectionary company, Cadbury’s; Lord of the Rings author J.R.R Tolkien and of course, the Prince of Darkness himself, Ozzy Osbourne.
Demographics
Although Birmingham is the UK’s second biggest city, it is the UK’s largest local authority by population with a population of 1,073,000 according to the 2011 census. The number of households in Birmingham was estimated at 410,700 at the 2011 census with about 55% of those either owned outright or with a mortgage. The average house price in Birmingham is £158,743 which is well below the UK average of £238,293.
Birmingham is one of the most ethnically diverse regions of the UK with a high proportion of the population being made up of non-white residents. Around 53% of the population of Birmingham claimed to be of White British origin at the last census in comparison to the average for England and Wales of 80.5% - with the other 47% being made up mainly of Asian/Asian-British and Afro-Caribbean residents. In terms of the affluence of its residents, while there are of course high earners living in the area, the overall average salary is just under the national average at £25,883.
Education
There are 288 state primary schools and 84 state secondary schools in Birmingham. 10 of the 84 secondary schools achieved an “outstanding” mark from Ofsted and 5 secondary schools in the authority area boasted 100% of their pupils getting 5 or more GCSEs including the King Edward VI Camp Hill schools for Girls and Boys.
There is a large student population in Birmingham with around 65,000 students studying at the 4 nearby universities and university colleges. The nearby Higher Education institutions are the University of Birmingham, Aston University, Birmingham City University and the University of Warwick. The University of Warwick is considered as one of the UK’s best and it has been in the top 6 of the Guardian’s University guide for the past 3 years.
Transport
As you would expect from the 2nd biggest city in the UK, Birmingham is extremely well connected with the rest of the UK and internationally. It’s central location means that many motorways come together around the city too. It is connected by the M6, M5, M40 and M42, which connect the city to London, Manchester, the South West and Leicestershire. It is about 2 hours from London and 1 ½ hours from Manchester by road. Major A-roads connect it to Wales and other towns and cities in England.
Birmingham is also served by Birmingham New Street rail station, which is the busiest interchange in the country outside of London. Direct services are possible to almost anywhere in the UK since it is one of the country’s main hubs, and it is about 1 hour 45 minutes to London. The Government’s controversial high-speed railway initiative will bring the journey time to London down to around an hour. Birmingham International Airport is a major UK airport and is the 3rd busiest non-London airport after Manchester and Edinburgh. The airport is located 6 miles out of the city and is accessible directly by train via Birmingham International rail station. The National Express and Megabus coach networks also serve the city with regular services to almost anywhere else in the UK.
Amenities and shopping
The Bullring shopping centre in the city centre has approximately 160 outlets with a lot of the mainstays of the high street that you would expect. There are regular farmers’ markets visiting the city and lest we forget the city’s famous Balti triangle with a huge range of Asian fabrics and jewellery.
There are plenty of places to eat in the city from Michelin starred restaurant Simpson’s to the huge selection of fantastic Asian restaurants around the city and especially in the Balti triangle. Birmingham is the home of the Balti curry and there are more Asian and Indian restaurants in Birmingham than anywhere else in the UK.
