Living in Southminister: the local area guide

Southminster lies at the very heart of the Dengie Peninsula, once an area of rich farmland and marsh, but now an important, and growing, part of London’s commuter belt.

The area around Southminster has been settled for many hundreds of years, with evidence of prehistoric inhabitants from Neolithic times and the Bronze Age having been found nearby. After the Industrial Revolution much of the surrounding marshland was reclaimed for farming and Southminster became home to the largest horse market in the area, which is mentioned in records as early as 1218 and ran until 1937, an impressive span of more than 700 years.

Southminster is just three miles north of Burnham-on-Crouch, which became prominent as a top yachting destination in the late 1800s, and continues to be one of the UK’s leading yachting areas to this day.

Nowadays, Southminster is a small, quiet town that’s popular with families and notable for its very easy access to London – the journey to Liverpool Street takes just over an hour – making it heaven for commuters.

The town centre boasts a conservation area, the highlight of which is the Parish Church of St Leonards, which dates back to the 12th century, and a selection of listed 17th century timber frame and weatherboard buildings. Though there aren’t a huge selection of shops it still has everything you could need, with the additional bonus of five pubs, one of which has been voted Essex CAMRA Pub of the Year five times.

Demographics

At the last count in 2011, Southminster had 4,272 residents, compared with 4,021 in 2001. People aged 30–44 make up the largest part of the population, making it a fairly youthful town, with an emphasis on families with younger children.

Southminster is an attractive town for professional people looking to live somewhere a little quieter, and a lot more affordable, than London, whilst still remaining within easy reach of the capital.

Education

Southminster Primary School is located at the centre of the town and has been classed as ‘requiring improvement’ in recent inspections, though its early years’ evaluation is ‘good’.

Within easy reach is Burnham-on-Crouch Primary School, which is classed as ‘good’, with pupils being said to ‘achieve well in most subjects, including reading, writing and mathematics.’ The local secondary school is Ormiston River Academy, which is described as ‘good’, with some teaching being ‘outstanding’. Schools that lie outside of Southminster operate bus and coach travel for pupils.

Transport

Southminster sits at the end of the relatively quiet Crouch Valley branch line, and commuters are able to travel from the hustle and bustle of London Liverpool Street and London Stratford to rural tranquillity in a little over an hour. In the opposite direction lies London Southend airport, which serves Europe and some countries further afield, making Southminster the perfect place to live if you fly frequently for work or pleasure.

Aside from the railway, there are several bus routes that travel between Chelmsford and Burnham, and serve the villages in between, including Steeple, Maldon, Purleigh and Danbury. The area around Southminster has mainly B roads, but the A414 can be picked up in nearby Danbury, from which the M25 is only a 20-minute drive.

Amenities and shopping

Southminster is a small place, but it covers the bases for day-to-day needs, with corner shops, a bakery, charity shops, a pharmacy, a library and a police station all to hand, and the usual selection of supermarkets a short drive away.

If you fancy eating out, there is a café, an Indian restaurant, a Chinese restaurant and a fish bar to choose from, but Southminster really comes into its own for the discerning drinker, boasting five pubs – no mean feat for a small town in this day and age. The best of them is the Station Arms, a traditional weatherboard building with listed status that has been voted Essex CAMRA Pub of the Year an impressive five times.
