Living in Llantrisant: The local area guide

Llantrisant is an ancient ward and town rooted in the legendary natural beauty of South Wales. It has been inhabited for millennia, properly settled since at least the 6th century, and played a key role in Welsh history. Various significant excavations and sites are here, including two Bronze Age burial grounds, the Miskin standing stone, Iron Age Caerau Hillfort, the remnants of Richard de Clare’s Norman style Llantrisant Castle from 1246 (though it already previously existed as a wooden fortress), Llantrisant Parish Church from 1096, and Y Billy Wynt, the 13th-century stone windmill that rests on the town’s highest point. The British Royal Mint is also located here, to the north of the town.

The “Parish of the Three Saints” lies in the historical county of Glamorgan, in the Ely Valley along the River Ely and Afon Clun. Today, this is the county borough of Rhondda Cynon Taf. Llantrisant Common and Pastures is a lovely green expanse that’s home to several rare plant species and a typical array of the birds and mammals of the British Isles. Among Llantrisant’s other many unique charms are its quaint cobblestone streets, white and stone houses, and the town’s central parkland.

In the southern part of the area, within the town and closest to nearby Cardiff, the quality of living is very high, ranking better than 92% of the rest of Wales. The residential area to the east of the village ranks better than 95%. The town is very active with sports, activities and local culture, which ultimately makes it an excellent environment to call home for families, single professionals or retired couples.

Demographics

In the immediate town of Llantrisant, there are some 4,876 residents, but in the wider ward the figure reaches 15,313 to include the small villages to the north.

Across the whole parish, a large number of the workforce is occupied as Professionals, but after this there is a varied, roughly even mix across many occupations. Nearly 97% of the population is of English, Welsh, Scottish, Northern Irish, descent. The population density is about 5 persons per hectare across the whole ward.

Education

There are plenty of primary schools in the area with Llantrisant Primary School and Pontyclun Primary School being some of the closest and most popular options. For secondary and beyond, Y Pant Comprehensive School is the closest, but others to consider would be Hawthorn High School and Tonyrefail Comprehensive.

Of course, for university education there is the excellent Cardiff University in the nearby capital of Wales.

Transport

Llantrisant is only 15 minutes from Cardiff and is close to the M4, so transport links are very good. The nearest train station is three miles away at Pontyclun. There are also several bus services in the area.

Amenities and shopping

There are a good number of independent shops in the town, including the Bullring Stores, a traditional toy shop, a florist, a butcher, a tailor, and the Model House craft exhibition centre. There are also several good restaurants to choose from. There is a robust pub culture, with frequenters to The New Inn, the Wheatsheaf Rooms, and the Cross Keys Hotel. A gallery and tea room has recently opened on the site of the old town library.

Close to town is the Talbot Green Shopping Park with a fair selection of common shops, but Cardiff is the best bet for more varied and extensive shopping options, plus a wide range of restaurants. At only 15 minutes away, Cardiff is practically next door and makes for a great day out. In addition, there are many interesting and historical sites to see, as well as some lovely green spaces.
