Living in Porthcawl: The Local Area Guide

Porthcawl is a small, pretty coastal town in South Wales. It is a highly popular tourist destination thanks to its long, characterful promenade and its two Blue Flag beaches. It features some top quality hotels and three golf courses, and is located less than thirty miles from the Welsh capital of Cardiff.

The promenade, which was built in the late 19th century as an homage to Queen Victoria on her Golden Jubilee, is one of the town's most recognizable features. It is exceptionally long and has a huge selection of lively bars, pubs, restaurants, bistros and cafés with stunning views over the water. Beside the promenade is Seafront Beach, and to the sides are Rest Bay, Pink Bay, Sker Beach, Sandy Bay, Trecco Bay and Newton Beach.

Just behind the town are some rolling sand dunes that conceal within them the ancient ruins of Kenfig Castle, which was in centuries gone by the primary administrative centre for the area. It was a vital military outpost for the Normans and later English rulers, and was subject to several sieges by Welsh armies throughout the Medieval period. It was suddenly abandoned in the fifteenth century as the sand dunes steadily moved in and reclaimed the land. Despite the extensive damage, it's easy to see today what a spectacle the castle once was.

Demographics

Porthcawl's population is fairly representative of the Welsh population as a whole, according to information gathered in the 2011 census. Around 16,000 people live there, and it has a mean age of 40.7, which compares to 40.6 for the rest of the country. Just over a fifth of people are under the age of 18, while just under a fifth are of pensionable age.

When judged by the occupation of the main household earner, Porthcawl's social grade profile is fairly typical of Wales (that is, below average for the UK as a whole). Just 16.5% of households are classified as AB while a further 28.2% are classified as C1. More than half of households, therefore, belong to the lower two social grades. The relatively low levels of income have resulted in more people claiming some sort of benefit - 19.7% of people do, slightly higher than the 17.4% for Wales as a whole. However, unemployment is still fairly low - just 3.3% of people claim Jobseeker's Allowance.

Despite this, property ownership is overall fairly high. More than 70% of households are owner occupied, which compares to a UK rate of around 63%. Almost half of those are owned outright, with the rest owned with a mortgage. Less than 11% of households are privately rented, and only around 15% are used as social housing.

The area also has high self-reported states of health - nearly 80% of people say their health is 'very good' or 'good'.

Education

Porthcawl has a good selection of schools serving the local families. There are four primary schools, which feed into one comprehensive secondary school. There is also one independent school, St Clare's which is a coeducational private school taking children from infancy all the way to the age of 18. It has a very good track record when it comes to GCSE and A level results.

Portchawl Comprehensive School also has a good reputation, ranked 'Good' by Ofsted in 2013. It has around 1,500 pupils, 80 teaching staff, and some famous ex-pupils including comedian Rob Brydon.

Transport

Porthcawl no longer has its own railway station - it was closed in the 1960s during the Beeching Closures. However, Bridgend railway station is close by and sitting on the mainline, offers direct journeys to major towns and cities nearby. From Cardiff, trains can then be taken all around the country.

For motorists, the A4229 connects Porthcawl to the M4, the main trunk road of South Wales.

Amenities and Shopping

Porthcawl's tourist industry means there is a good level of demand for retail. As such, it has more to offer shoppers than would be predicted by its size.

Throughout the streets are some fantastic locally-owned independent gift, antique, book and clothing stores. There are also some more recognizable high-street brands, although for major shopping trips locals will often make the trip to Swansea or Cardiff.
