Living in Meifod: The local area guide

Meifod is set in rural mid-Wales and offers bustling village life just seven miles from Welshpool, in Powys. Located in the valley of the River Vyrnwy, the landscape here is beautiful – leaving much to be admired by its residents. The local area is also a popular spot amongst royalty – with the residence of the Princes of Wales just one mile north-east of the village.

The quaint village offers everything you’d expect – a friendly atmosphere, a retreat away from busy city life, and a few village amenities. The parish church of St Tysilio and St. Mary is at the heart of the village, while other amenities include a convenience store with a Post Office, a popular pub, and a school.

Despite its small population, the residents have worked hard to make their name in the sporting world. The local rugby team take their game seriously and even built their own clubhouse and two pitches back in 2006. The village football team are another popular community team and play in the amateur division. Other community events take place at the village hall, which is home to a variety of clubs and societies.

Demographics

The 2011 census revealed a population of 2,391. Unlike the surrounding villages and towns, a large proportion of the population (43.8%) could speak, read, or write Welsh.

Despite its modest size, the village does have an excellent employment rate with almost 70% of residents employed within the village and surrounding towns. Approximately 18% of the residents are retired.

The range of jobs held by residents reveals the wide variety of opportunities available in the region. While a quarter were employed in skilled trade occupations, just under a third worked in high-level roles or professional occupations.

Education

There are plenty of great educational establishments nearby, making this an ideal location for families with children of school age. The village school, Ysgol Meifod, performed particularly well in its latest inspection in 2009, graded as ‘good’ in the majority of areas. The Estyn report also revealed that some areas of the curriculum, and the achievement of under fives at the school, were even better than the grade two rating of ‘good’. Instead, they highlighted these areas as having ‘outstanding features’.

While there aren’t any secondary schools in the village itself, there are a few choices in nearby Oswestry. The Marches School is just one of the offerings and is an academy school. Alternatively, students can attend Oswestry School, an independent school. Both schools are located within 13 miles of Meifod and are easily accessible by public transportation. The schools also offer education up to the age of 18.

Alternatively, further education can be undertaken at North Shropshire College, which offers tuition for those aged 16 plus.

Transport

While the village doesn’t have its own train station, it does offer good transportation links around the village and to the nearby towns. There are a variety of bus services, predominantly operated by Owens and Tanat Valley, which offer services around the area and to the local schools.

Coach services are available too, with direct transport to locations including Aberystwyth, Llanfechain, and Talybont.

For those wishing to travel further afield, the nearest train station is in Welshpool and is approximately seven miles away.

Travelling by car is easy too. To get to the village you take the A490 north from Welshpool and follow signs to the village.

Amenities and shopping

Shopping isn’t the strong point here in Meifod, but there are plenty of community activities to enjoy and a popular pub. The picturesque Kings Head Inn is central to the village and a popular hotspot for all residents.

For your grocery needs, there’s a Londis and Spar nearby in Guilsfield, and a small convenience store and Post Office in the village. Big brand supermarket shopping is available in Welshpool, where you’ll find a Morrisons, Tesco, and Iceland.

When it comes to high street shopping, you’ll find some of your favourites in Oswestry, located 13 miles away. A better selection of shops and leisure amenities can be found at Eagles Meadow Shopping Centre in Wrexham and Darwin Shopping Centre in Shrewsbury. Both of these are located within 30 miles of the village.
