Living in Henlow: The local area guide

Tucked away in Central Bedfordshire is the charming, spacious village of Henlow. A beautiful 13th century church is its central feature, though the Champney’s health resort and spa in the historic Henlow Grange manor home is perhaps its most well-known attraction. The village is home to several families and is close to the RAF Henlow military and training base.

The village’s charming character is defined by the various streams that run through and alongside it, sourced from the gentle currents of the River Ivel. A collection of lakes are interspersed with the river to the east of the village, and within this area is a host of birds and woodland creatures. The enchanting Swiss Gardens, a peacock settlement, a grotto, an RSPB Nature Reserve and several interesting museums are all part of the village's unique countryside allure.

Amenities and shopping

Henlow is a beautiful community with shops, pubs and restaurants along the High Street. Ansell Village Stores is the local convenience store and post office, and among its pubs and bars are The Crown gastro-pub, Engineers Arms, The Five Bells and the Bird in Hand Hotel. Langford Garden Centre is just a short drive up Langford road towards Langford and across from Baulk Wood.

There is a lovely park in the centre of the village, Henlow Golf Course, a cricket pitch and the Henlow Grange, a luxury health resort and spa from the Champney’s range that puts Henlow’s historic old manor home to excellent use as a countryside escape. Bedford to the north and Hitchin to the south extend shopping choice, particularly for groceries, but as the area is so well connected there are plenty of places within easy reach to expand the shopping options.
