The county of Warwickshire
Best known as the birth place of William Shakespeare, Warwickshire is a landlocked county in the heart of England, with a population of approximately half a million. The terrain is gently rolling, with outcroppings of the Cotswold Hills in the South, and the Avon serving as the main river. The area to the North of Stratford-upon-Avon was formerly the Forest of Arden and, even though much of the forest was cleared during the Middle Ages and the industrial revolution, the area still maintains a wooded character. Some light industry is practiced in Warwickshire, but the area is primarily agricultural. Numerous traces of the Roman occupation remain, such as the Abbeys of Merevale and Stoneleigh, and the ruins of the castle at Kenilworth. Warwick Castle is still largely intact and an excellent place to explore. Stratford-upon-Avon is steeped in culture and history and is set in the beautiful rural Warwickshire countryside, on the banks of the river Avon. There is much to do here, including shopping at the lively market, sampling the local beer and seeing a play at Globe Theatre, which is one of England's most popular literary attractions.
A brief history
The origin of the county's name (first recorded as Waeinewiscscr) is Anglo-Saxon, meaning "The farm by a river dam". During the Middle Ages Warwickshire was dominated by Coventry, which at the time was one of the most important cities in England, due to its textiles trade. The county played a key part in the English Civil War, with the battle of Edgehill and other skirmishes taking place there. During the industrial revolution Warwickshire became one of Britain's foremost industrial counties, with the large industrial cities of Birmingham and Coventry within its boundaries. In 1974 boundary changes removed Birmingham and Coventry from the county, leaving the present day county with its rather odd shape. The county's main town is Warwick, which has a number of picturesque half-timbered houses, including the Elizabethan Oken's House which is now a doll museum. The county's rivers are the Avon, Tame and Anker, and its highest point is Ilmington Downs at 854 feet.
