Local Information:
Milesdown Place is located in Northbrook Avenue within the desirable St Giles Hill area on the southern fringes of Winchester. This has been a favoured spot for centuries - and not simply because St Giles Hill provides the most wonderful panoramic city views.
Archaelogical excavations have revealed significant finds from the late Neolithic, Saxon and medieval periods and earthworks discovered here are thought to have formed part of Winchesters Civil War defences.
From the 11th century, St Giles Hill was known as the site of Europes largest fair, held on 31st August - the Eve of St Giles. During this 16-day fair, all other trading in Winchester ceased and the Bishop received revenues normally due to the King. By the
19th century, the fair had disappeared and the building of villas threatened this beauty spot. A public outcry saved the summit and the southwestern slopes which still provide magnificent
views over the city and St Catherines Hill.
Winchester City Centre also retains a rich sense of history. Once the capital of Saxon Wessex, it has ancient city walls, timber-beamed inns, cobbled streets and an impressive medieval cathedral which is the final resting place of many of Englands ancient
kings, saints, bishops and commoners including Izaac Walton and Jane Austen.

Winchester has a wealth of gardens and green space including The Abbey Gardens and Mill, once part of the site of St Marys Abbey which suffered during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. The site was gifted to the City by Queen Mary Tudor to celebrate her
marriage to Philip of Spain in the Cathedral in 1554. Remains of St Marys Abbey can be seen at the back of the Guildhall.
