Location: The site is located in one of the more mature northern parts of the town with planted wooded areas to the North and East. The site lies on the edge of Weston super Mare's Victorian settlement and
within the Birnbeck Conservation Area. Uninterrupted views of the Brean Sands to the South West are available. To the North West the views extend across the Bristol Channel to the islands of Flat and Steep Holm. Beyond lies the Welsh coast. Westcliff is a
short walk from the bustling activity of the town centre with its famous seaside attractions and well established shopping facilities.
Numerous private and local authority Nursery, Primary, Secondary Schools and Sixth Form Colleges serve the area. The Universities of Bristol, Cardiff and Bath are all within easy driving distance.
Hospitals in Clevedon and Burnham on Sea serve local needs and local health centres, dentists and opticians are numerous in the locality.
History: Situated at the foot of Worlebury Hill, a scheduled ancient monument with evidence of settlement from the Iron Age onwards, the site is cut into a wide terrace and sits approximately 300 feet above
sea level.
By 1853 local landowner John Piggott, of Brockley Hall near Bristol had planned the development of Brockley Crescent (now Upper Kewstoke Road) as 5 pairs of semi detached villas. Whilst the first two homes were built as originally planned, the remaining four
pairs of semi detached homes were constructed as fine detached Victorian villas - a sign that, even then, the quality of the location, initially underestimated, was capable of supporting the very finest of homes in the town.
The turn of the 20th century heralded the establishment of a Convent School at No. 8 ("Radford"). The school which came to be known as "Westcliff School" was a great success and soon all 4 detached villas (Dunraven, Westcliff, Radford and Birnbeck) had been
connected to form an enlarged educational establishment with associated gymnasium, dormitory and assembly hall facilities.
The school closed in 1963 at which point the property was sold to Somerset County Council to provide a satellite campus for Weston super Mare technical college.
Following the relocation of the college's facilities to new premises in August 2007 the properties were sold to conservation developer Broadway Heritage with the intention of restoring the properties to their original use - seaside homes of distinction.
