The grand wrought iron arches of Paddington Station, designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel in 1854, are instantly recognisable on the London skyline, and these, along with Michael Bond's well-known tales of Paddington Bear make it one of the most famous railway stations in the world.

Cosmopolitan Bayswater, bordering the north of Hyde Park, has an incredibly diverse, international population. It has one of the highest concentrations of hotels in London, so tourists often use the area as a base for exploring central London.

Beautiful Hyde Park, famous for its Speakers' Corner, is one of London’s largest parks and a green haven in the middle of the city. Dissected by the Serpentine, Hyde Park often holds enormous concerts and has seen all manner of bands performing since 1968. From Fleetwood Mac to Pavarotti, the list is as long as it is varied, and Hyde Park continues to attract artists from all over the globe.

Demographics

The population in Paddington, Bayswater, Hyde Park and indeed the entirety of the City of Westminster is extremely varied. Over a quarter of the population are migrants and the majority of live in privately rented accommodation (40%), as many of Bayswater’s Georgian stucco townhouses have been converted into multiple-occupancy flats. 30% of the population own their own home, and some of these include multi-million pound penthouses such as those at The Lancasters, a unique development of apartments with spectacular views across Hyde Park.

Education

There are a number of independent primary schools in the Paddington, Bayswater and Hyde Park area, including Pembridge Hall and Wetherby Preparatory Schools.

There are only a few secondary schools in Paddington, Bayswater and Hyde Park. The two largest secondary schools in or near the area are Westminster Academy and Lansdowne College. Westminster Academy is a mixed sex state academy with 932 pupils. It was found to be satisfactory in a recent Ofsted inspection. Landsdowne College is a mixed sex independent school with 275 pupils. 73% of their GCSE students achieved A* to C grades in 2012.

Transport

Transport links in the area are fantastic, with Paddington Station acting as a gateway to the west of the UK. The underground stations of Queensway and Lancaster Gate on the Central Line and Bayswater on the Circle and District lines are located in the south of the area. Several bus routes follow Bayswater Road both in and out of the city and Paddington Station also serves as a hub for numerous bus routes that traverse the capital.

Amenities and Shopping

Whiteleys Shopping Centre is at the heart of Bayswater, and has a selection of independent boutiques as well a variety of high street stores to cater to all tastes.

When it comes to eating out, again it is variation that makes the area unique, and it is just as easy to find a late night cafe on Queensway as it is to enjoy a meal in a boutique hotel such as The Caesar in Queen's Gardens.

Hyde Park covers 350 acres and is home to a number of buildings and monuments such as the Serpentine Bridge and the Joy of Life fountain. It holds a number of open air events throughout the year as well as having year round facilities for various sporting pursuits.
