A modern village in Essex that still retains a nod to the past in its architecture, Hockley is a popular area with London commuters and is only a short distance from the beach. Hockley's name stems from the Anglo Saxon word for 'small hill,' and it refers, in this case, both to Hockley village as well as the civil parish. Southend-on-Sea is a short drive away, boasting a quaint promenade, sandy beaches and Victorian-era architecture. Yet there's no shortage of historic architecture within Hockley as well, and one can view a Grade II listed church in the town centre.
Today the town is a bustling modern centre with a wide range of services and amenities. There's a Hockley Lawn Tennis club on hand as well as the Hockley United Football Club. Public buildings include a library and post office, as well as the Old Firehouse community centre. Retail shops, cafes, churches, and schools round out the local offerings.
According to 2001 Census figures, there was a population of 8,909 within Hockley parish alone. In the most recent report, 98 per cent of Greensward students achieved 5 A* to C GCSE grades.
With an ideal position in between the seaside community of Southend-on-Sea and the attractions of London, Hockley attracts a number of commuters. Many choose to drive into London via the A13 motorway, a journey which takes just over an hour. Southend is less than 20 minutes away by motorway and can be accessed via the B1013.
The busy Hockley railway station is located on the Shenfield to Southend Line and is managed by Abellio Greater Anglia. During off-peak travel time, three trains stop each hour providing services to London Liverpool or Southend Victoria. There are also bus links to destinations throughout Essex provided by the Arriva Bus Company. These include the 7 and 9 lines, which connect the parish with Southend and the 407 route to Shoeburyness.
Amenities & Shopping
Within Hockley's modern town centre, residents benefit from a wide range of public services and retail outlets. The Old Fire Station is a popular community gathering place and on the second Saturday of each month the Village Market and Craft Fair is held in front of it. This local market is hosted by the Hockley Parish Council, providing a wealth of local produce and craft stalls. Another good source of local produce is the La Vallee Farm Shop, which offers freshly picked vegetables as well as hand reared meat products and sausages. Further amenities within the town centre include kitchen supply, computer repair and charity shops, as well as a children's clothing boutique, library, and post office. Sainsbury's Local is on hand for grocery needs, while the Royals and Victoria Shopping Centres are a short drive away in Southend.
