Living in Winlaton: The Local Area Guide

Winlaton is an attractive village positioned directly neighbouring Blaydon. It’s part of the Gateshead borough, with well-planned modern housing estates linking it to the boundaries of Blaydon. Winlaton is positioned 450 feet above the River Tyne, and residents enjoy panoramic views of the neighbouring towns and verdant valleys below. This small town played a large role in the history of the steel industry, being the location of the Ambrose Crowley steel works. The Crowley works were responsible for manufacturing nails and other iron goods, including the Buckingham Palace gates. The forge remains in town today, being one of the oldest in the world, dating back to the 17th Century.

Modern Winlaton is better known for its suburban charm than its steel works. It offers residents a selection of churches, community spaces, and parks. The Super Dene Wood is located in the area, with its walking trails and wildlife. It’s part of the larger Gibside Estate. The Winlaton Centre is another community highlight in town. It hosts community events, including youth clubs and fitness classes. The high street is fully lined with shops, takeaways, and public houses.
