Waltham Cross is home to one of the last remaining Eleanor Crosses, which were installed between the years of 1291 and 1294. The crosses, of which there were 12 to begin with, were spread throughout the southeast of England at the behest of King Edward I, who wanted to celebrate the memory of his late wife, Eleanor of Castile. Prior to merging into the Borough of Broxbourne with Cheshunt and the Hoddesdon urban district councils, Waltham Cross was a partition of the ancient parish of Cheshunt. A small town with several claims to historical fame, perhaps the most famous person to reside in Waltham Cross was Victorian novelist Anthony Trollope whose work touched on political, social and gender issues.
