Living in Stony Stratford: The local area guide

Stony Stratford is a charming market town in Milton Keynes. Ideally located in the centre of England, it offers all the perks and history of a small town whilst providing easy access to the rest of the country and nearby employment opportunities.

Stony Stratford was incorporated into Milton Keynes in the late 20th century. In 1967, it was announced that the city of Milton Keynes was to be built, incorporating a number of villages and towns in the area. Stony Stratford was just one of the many towns invited to be part of Milton Keynes and opted in.

Despite joining the city of Milton Keynes, Stony Stratford has kept much of its original character, but benefitted from big city perks. Better facilities and improved employment opportunities were just some of the things to come out of its integration with Milton Keynes.

One thing the residents love about the town is its deep-rooted history and old town charm. In fact, there has been a market in Stony Stratford since 1194 – although the monthly and weekly markets in Stony Stratford now specialise in local farm produce rather than livestock!

Today Stony Stratford is a bustling yet beautiful market town with many pubs and specialist shops. There are historical treasures to be found at every corner, as well as stunning countryside views and, most importantly, a fantastic community spirit.

The 2011 census also highlighted that Stony Stratford was a relatively educated area, with nearly 40% of the population having undertaken degree level education or higher.

When it comes to housing in the area, the majority of properties at the time of the census were terraced (55%), with just 25% of properties detached or semi detached.

Amenities and shopping

If you’re looking for your everyday essentials, you’ll be able to find all you need in the local shops. While the town doesn't house any big-name brands, there are plenty of independent family owned shops, offering a range of goods, and a Nisa and Budgens for picking up those essentials.

Residents needn’t travel far to do their weekly shop either. There’s an Asda supermarket and a Tesco superstore just a couple of miles away in nearby Wolverton.
