Living in South Ockendon: The Local Area Guide

The Essex town of South Ockendon boasts a rich history and the town's origins can be dated back to before the Norman Conquests of the 11th century. Astonishingly, a village that lay in the place of modern day South Ockendon was referred to in the Domesday Book from 1086 - although it bore the name of Wocheduna, a name taken from the Saxon chief Wocca who lived there with his tribe at the time.

Modern day South Ockendon is a far cry from the settlement that resided there all those years ago. It is now a popular relocation destination for young professionals who work in London, but require the extra space and lower living costs that living outside of the Big Smoke bring.

Demographics

While South Ockendon can trace its origins all the way back to the 11th century, the town has grown rather a lot since then. Today, close to 18,070 people call South Ockendon home, based on figures provided by the GeoNames geographical database. Many of South Ockendon's residents own their own properties either outright or with a mortgage to pay off and live with their respective families. Shared accommodation, like the sort you might find in London, is certainly not common in South Ockendon.

Education

South Ockendon is home to a number of primary schools - all of which perform rather well when compared to other schools throughout the country. This will certainly come as good news to parents who are concerned about where to send their children! The schools operating in South Ockendon include Dilkes Academy, Shaw Primary and Holy Cross Catholic Primary just to name a few. While children will no doubt be happy at any of these schools, it wouldn't be unfair to assume that most parents will try to have their children enrolled at Dilkes Academy, as this primary school was identified as operating at an 'Outstanding' level when visited by Ofsted in 2012.

Interestingly, the immediate South Ockendon area does not actually have its own high school - meaning that parents of teenage children will have to look to the surrounding suburbs for alternatives. Luckily, there are a number of options on offer in neighbouring areas that don't require hours of travel time to reach. The closest secondary level school to South Ockendon is Ormiston Park Academy in nearby Aveley, which is only a nine-minute drive away from the centre of the town. While it may be incredibly close, parents should be advised that the school was cited as 'requiring improvement' when evaluated by Ofsted.

Other alternatives include William Edwards School in Grays and Harris Academy in Chafford Hundred. Both of these secondary schools were awarded a grade of 'Outstanding' by Ofsted. Harris Academy performs exceptionally well on a national level, with 92% of students achieving five A*-C grades at GCSE level - a figure well above the national average of 53%. Parents should note, however, that William Edwards School only teaches children up to the age of 16, as it does not have a sixth form.

Transport

Due to its proximity to London, South Ockendon's train station sees a large number of commuters passing through its barriers on a daily basis. On a good run, it can take as little as 50 minutes to travel door to door from Ockendon Station to Oxford Circus Station. With travel times this short, it is easy to see the appeal of living in a place like South Ockendon. Transport for London also operates a number of buses in the area, which are available to take commuters around the town itself, as well as to neighbouring areas. The M25 motorway is also easily accessible from South Ockendon.

Amenities and shopping

Shoppers seeking high fashion retailers will most likely find themselves rather limited by the choice of charity shops and independent stores on offer in South Ockendon. That being said, with London just around the corner, you will never have to travel too far to keep your wardrobe up to date.
