Living in Ottershaw: The local area guide

The lovely Surrey village and civil parish of Ottershaw is situated about 20 miles south-west of London in the district of Runnymede. The Fox Hills ward is classified as mixed rural and suburban, making it ideal for those wishing to escape the bustling city while still being within easy reach of its work opportunities and lively atmosphere. Neighbouring villages include West Byfleet, Woodham, Addlestone and Chertsey.

Surrey is full of beautiful rivers and gentle lakes that are particularly cherished by fishing enthusiasts, with Ottershaw being no exception. Walkers and cyclists will be equally pleased by the southern charm of the famed Surrey countryside. The wider area has much to offer, from majestic manor homes to areas of outstanding natural beauty.

The historical Mansion of Ottershaw Park estate has been renovated and converted into private apartments. The community is very engaged, with its own society preserving the village history and hosting several fairs throughout the year.

The population of Ottershaw is 1,319, though the wider parish reaches over twice that at 2,853. The 30-59 age group accounts for nearly half the population (47.5%).

Of the 732 employed residents, the top occupations are Professionals (18.9%), Associate Professionals and Technical (16.8%), and Managers, Directors and Senior Officials (13%). The average distance travelled to work is 13.82 km, and about 80% of working adults travel by car.

Most businesses in the area are very small and local, employing four persons or less. Professional, Scientific and Technical, and Business Administration and Support Services are the prevalent industries, with a tie between Health and Construction as the third largest industries.

Ottershaw C of E Infant & Junior School is the village primary school. In 2015, 82% of pupils achieved, at least, a level 4 in all subjects.

Jubilee High School is the nearest secondary for ages 11-16 in Addlestone, less than a mile away, and the Roman Catholic Salesian School, just a mile away in Chertsey, is the closest comprehensive secondary and sixth form. At Salesian School, 99% of pupils achieved at least 3 A-levels.

Nearby Chertsey and Addlestone have the closest railway stations, with others close by in West Byfleet, Byfleet and New Haw, Weybridge, and Longcross. The village lies just off the M25, giving it excellent road connections. Chertsey is reached in 8 minutes by bus, 4 minutes by car, or 45 minutes walking, if you fancy the 2.5-mile stroll. The area is also lovely for cycling.

London can be reached in about 45 minutes by taking a bus down to Woking (14-minute ride) and then a 26-minute train to London Waterloo. Bus connections are good, with frequent buses into nearby towns and a 2.5-hour bus ride to London on line 461. London is around 35 minutes away by car. Guildford to the south, Bracknell to the north-west and Weybridge to the east are all within very easy distance.
