Living in Montgomery: the local area guide

The small town of Montgomery rests amid the Welsh Marshes in the midland county of Powys, just on the border with England. The town’s deep history dates as far back as the Early Middle Ages, and the town developed around its eponymous hilltop castle and parish church, both from the 13th century.

The preserved mix of Georgian and Victorian architecture and timber framed houses personifies Montgomery in its current identity as a thriving historic market town. Montgomery’s community offers a wealth of activity and interesting sites, including the Old County Gaol and the Old Bell Museum.

Montgomery Castle, Powys Castle and the historic Offa’s Dyke Path, one of Britain’s National Trails, are within easy reach of the village, as are the beautiful rolling hills of the surrounding countryside.

If you decide to move to Montgomery, you’ll discover stunning properties, a glorious landscape and brilliant transport links to the surrounding area.

Amenities and shopping

Though Montgomery is a small town, it is, in fact, host to some of the finest dining to be found in the area. ‘The Checkers’ is a French style restaurant housed within a converted coaching inn, and was awarded 3 stars by the Michelin Guide.

It also serves as a hotel, as does ‘The Dragon’, another hotel and one of the few pubs in the town. Whilst there is a village shop, for more large scale food shops and High Street shopping you’ll have to make the short journey to one of the nearby hubs, such as Newtown.

Newtown hosts not only shopping malls, but is also home to the largest arts venue in the region, the Oriel Davies gallery, as well as several museums and the 555 seat Theatre Hafren.
