Living in Midsomer Norton: the local area guide

The history of Midsomer Norton can be traced back to the Iron Age, with a number of historic landmarks and natural beauty spots in the region to explore. For modern residents, Midsomer Norton is conveniently located near the cities of Bath and Bristol, yet offers a charm all its own.

The River Somer flows through this historic Somerset market town, with nearby sights including the Nunney Castle and Church of the Holy Ghost. The Somerset countryside is within easy reach and many visitors take day trips to natural attractions such as the Cheddar Gorge, with its intricate network of caves.

Relax in the greenery of the Hollies Garden, or take a stroll down Midsomer Norton’s lengthy High Street with its array of shops and conveniences. You’ll certainly enjoy the atmosphere of this bustling modern village.

Demographics

With both Bath and Bristol within easy reach, it’s, perhaps, no surprise that Midsomer Norton is a popular town for commuters. Many residents choose to make the daily journey into larger cities for administrative, retail, or managerial work roles.

However, Midsomer Norton was traditionally a mining town, with notable mines including Norton Hill and Old Mills. These were at one time a very important part of the economy before the last mine shut down in 1966. After this, the printing and packaging industry became an important local contributor to the economy. At one point, over one-quarter of the residents worked in this industry and many now work in the area’s business parks.

Midsomer Norton is divided into two wards, including Midsomer Norton Redfield and Midsomer Norton North. Together, the population of the town is approximately 11,000 residents according to the most recent Census.

Education

Primary students in Midsomer Norton are well-served with several schools. These include Westfield Primary, Norton Primary, Longvernal Primary, Welton Primary, and St John’s Church of England.

One of the most notable education facilities in town is Norton Hill School, which is a secondary school with two specializations: Language, and Maths and Computing. It has earned numerous distinctions, including a Sportsmark and Artsmark award.

Norton Hill is linked with the other secondary school in town, Somervale School. Somervale has been awarded an Eco-Schools Silver Award and is a specialist Arts College. As a linked entity, both schools share a head teacher and have been designated ‘Good’ by Ofsted. Neighbouring Westfield is home to Norton Radstock College, which many students also attend.

Transport

Midsomer Norton is easily accessible by a number of major motorways, which is ideal for commuters travelling to nearby Bristol or Bath. Bath is particularly well linked to Midsomer Norton via the A367 or A39 motorways, and the 768 bus provides direct access to the city centre at regular intervals throughout the day.

It’s a 45-minute drive to Bristol via the A37 and bus services are also available. Residents can choose from several local bus operators. One of the biggest is First Somerset and Avon, but others include Citistar or Libra Travel.

Midsomer Norton’s iconic railway station shut in 1966, and now the closest station is located in Bath. This offers direct service to cities throughout the UK, including daily services to London.

Amenities and shopping

As a fairly sizeable modern town, Midsomer Norton is home to most High Street retailers as well as a bevy of independent shops. On top of this, the High Street in Midsomer Norton offers free parking for visitors, making shopping particularly convenient.

Sample the flavours of Somerset at the local Farmers’ Market, a very pleasant way to spend a Saturday morning. This sprawling market is held on the first Saturday of each month, from 9 am to 1 pm. Visitors can pick and choose from a number of freshly baked pastries and quiches, as well as meat, fish, and seasonal produce in a friendly, sociable environment. You’ll also find a Sainsbury’s, Lidl, and Tesco superstore in town for daily shopping needs.
