East London Area Guide

Stretching from Hackney to Dagenham, to the green infrastructure of Stratford and the Olympic Park, to the open space of Walthamstow and beyond, East London has a multitude of faces. The London boroughs of Barking and Dagenham, Hackney, Havering, Newham, Redbridge, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest all fall within the boundaries of East London.

Close to the city, moving from west to east, Hoxton, Haggerston, Dalston, London Fields and Hackney Central you can find Banksy originals, Broadway Market and fixed-gear cyclists; to £400k loft apartments, gastro-bars and vintage shops, galleries and clubs. Bethnal Green has a relaxed vibe, good connections and a reasonable cost of living. Mile End and Bow have a similar feel, but are less expensive.

Further east, towards Stratford and Leyton, the 2012 Summer Olympics have led to huge amounts of development in the area, most of it very positive. The new infrastructure is really remarkable. House prices are rapidly rising but there are still bargains to be grabbed.

If you're prepared to move even further out, Walthamstow is a friendly place with good transport links and good value housing stock.

Demographics

About 1.7 million people live in the seven boroughs of East London, and these are some of the most ethnically diverse parts of the whole country. Barking and Dagenham (pop. 187,000), Hackney (pop. 247,200), Havering (pop. 237,900), Newham (pop. 310,500), Redbridge (pop. 281,400), Tower Hamlets (pop. 256,000) and Waltham Forest (pop. 259,700).

Transport

East London suffered for many years with poor transport links, particularly compared to the rest of London. However, with lots of new development, due in no small part to the Summer Olympics in 2012, much of East London now has improved connections.

The overground East London Line runs north to south, along with the DLR which also stretches to the south east. The District and Central lines somewhat sparsely populate the rest of East London and buses are widely used by those who don't live near a station. The nearest mainline London station is Liverpool Street, with fast connections out of the City.

Education

Some of the area's finest primary schools include Wanstead Church Primary School, Wells Primary School and Churchfields Junior School. Waltham Forest's independent Forest School, Hackney's Mossbourne Academy (ranked one of the best schools in the UK) and Redbridge's Ilford County High School (selective) are the highlights for secondaries.

There are also four new schools on the books for East London, three of which will sit in or close to Hackney.

Amenities and Shopping

The East End of London (Haggerston, Hackney and Hoxton etc) is known for its nightlife, with lots of wine bars and some of the best clubs in London. However, it's during the summer, with BBQs in Victoria Park and boat parties on the canal that East London really shines.

Visit Brick Lane for a chance to experience some original curry and other great food. Broadway Market and the surrounding area has chic cafes, tasty takeaways and lots of vintage shops. For a larger-than-life shopping experience, try Westfield in Stratford.

Obviously the sports facilities in East London have experienced a huge boost thanks to the Olympics. Due to the social investment commitments connected to the original bid, a lot of money has poured into facilities beyond the Park's boundaries.
