Living in Stockbridge: The local area guide

Situated approximately 65 miles away from London, Stockbridge is a charming town in England's southern county of Hampshire. The River Test runs through the high street, with the town falling at the heart of the area's Test Valley.

One of the town's local delicacies is fresh trout, which comes directly from the river. It's also where the world's first ever fishing club – Houghton Fishing Club – was founded, back in 1882.

The town is also home to the Iron Age fort Danebury, as well as Houghton Lodge and Gardens, which is well worth a walk around on a sunny day. Wine connoisseurs can enjoy a stroll around Danebury Vineyards, and sample a selection of high-end sparkling and still white wines.

Demographics

Stockbridge is known for its close-knit community, having reported a small population of less than 600 people in a 2001 census. Its relaxed countryside surroundings make it a popular destination for the older generation, with the average age of the local populous coming in at slightly higher than both UK and Hampshire averages. The town's largest age bracket is 45 to 49 years old, and the median age is 43 years old.

The town is also an attractive prospect for young professionals, with unemployment rates that are lower than both the national average and the county average. The rate of residents claiming benefits of any kind is more than 2% lower than the national average.

Education

Test Valley Secondary School is also conveniently located in the town, and similarly received a ‘Good’ rating from Ofsted in 2013. For alternative education options, residents can visit Leckford Estate Field Centre, which provides produce to Waitrose supermarket. The centre was set up to aid the advancement of the natural sciences.

University students living in Stockbridge can reach the University of Winchester in just 20 minutes by car, or the University of Chichester in approximately one hour.

Transport

The easiest routes into Stockbridge by car include the M3 and A303, with London just 56 miles away. The town is also served by the A30, which runs directly into Stockbridge.
