If you’re looking for a vibrant and bustling town to live in, Bolton may just have what you’re looking for. Located just a few miles away from the popular city of Manchester, in the North West of England, Bolton offers all the perks of a big town while also boasting stunning countryside.
Bolton’s population grew in size in the 19th-century, with many people moving to the city to call it home. It became one of the largest and most productive centres in industry and by 1900 was Lancashire’s third largest engineering centre. Now, Bolton is best known for its shops and amenities and multicultural vibe. You’ll find high street shops, restaurants, pubs, and cafes, as well as theatres and cultural offerings galore.
Census data was last collected in 2011 and revealed a population of over 276,000 in Bolton. Almost three quarters of the population were aged between 16-74 and just under one sixth of the population had retired. For those children aged 11+ there are a selection of schools to choose from. Bolton Muslim Girls School is rated highly by Ofsted, as is Thomasson Memorial School. Other good secondary schools include Essa Academy, Ladybridge High School, and Turton School. For pupils aged 16 plus, Thomasson Memorial School and Canon Slade CofE School are the best-rated local schools.
The road network and public transportation services in and around Bolton are good. If you regularly travel by car, you’ll be pleased to know that the M60, M61 and M6 are all just moments away. Driving in and around Bolton is easy too – not that you’d need to with the fantastic bus services available. The town has a free town centre bus service; ideal for teens, young adults, and the elderly. It runs every 10 minutes during peak hours and offers a reliable service. Alternatively, a number of local bus operators offer further routes.
If you’re looking to travel further afield, the local train station offers a fantastic range of routes. In fact, Bolton is one of Greater Manchester’s busiest rail stations, thanks to its direct links to nearby cities and towns. Your nearest airport isn’t far away either. Manchester Airport can be reached within 45 minutes by car and offers a comprehensive range of flights across the UK and the globe.
Amenities and Shopping
Bolton is a relatively big town, so you’ll find all the amenities and shops you need here. For your weekly groceries, you’ll have a choice of supermarkets, including a Sainsbury’s, Asda, and Morrisons. The mix of high street shops here is good too – with all your usual stores like Boots and Debenhams located within the town. Bolton also has its fair share of independent stores – for those one-off unique finds.
The town is well known for its markets too – boasting not one but four. The main market is located in the town centre and home to local produce.
