Living in Grange-Over-Sands: The Local Area Guide

The sleepy seaside town of Grange-over-Sands is picturesque and relaxing. It’s a popular place for retirees, with the population here being older than average. Located on Morecambe Bay, it’s just 30 miaanutes from Lancaster and close to other major cities and towns. So, despite its quiet feel, you’re never too far away from the action.

The town developed in the Victorian era and soon became a popular seaside resort. It’s still popular among tourists and features an ornamental duck pond and promenade. There’s a variety of independent shops here and a selection of grocery stores, plus plenty of cafes and tearooms. Children’s needs aren’t forgotten either – there’s a fantastic Promenade Recreation Area for them too!


Grange-over-Sands is a small town with a population of just over 4,000, as recorded in the 2011 census. At the time of data collection, residents lived across just over 2000 households, the largest proportion of which were detached properties (36%). Semi-detached homes were lived in by 20% of the community and terraced homes by 11%.

While only 54% of the population here was employed at the time of the census, just 1.38% of residents were unemployed. The reason the employment rate seems a little low is because of the older population here in Grange-over-Sands. With over 40% of the population aged 65 and over and 33% retired, Grange-over-Sands has an ageing community. Saying that, those in employment were in good roles. The largest proportion of residents were in Professional Occupations (18.5%) and a large number employed as Managers, Directors and Senior Officials (15.3%).


Whether you’re looking for primary or secondary school education, you’re bound to be impressed with the offerings here. There are a number of excellent primary schools to choose from, Cartmel CofE Primary School coming out top. Rated “outstanding” by Ofsted, inspectors noted, “The quality of teaching is outstanding overall and never less than good. Highly enjoyable, well-planned lessons enable all pupils to flourish.”

There is just one secondary school in Grange-over-Sands, but with its fantastic reputation, you needn’t consider anywhere else. Cartmel Priory CofE School, which became an academy school back in 2011, was assessed as a “good” school in its last inspection. The recent Ofsted report says “Students make good progress in most subjects. Achievement in mathematics is outstanding; attainment and progress are consistently better than average.” What’s more, there’s the thriving Lancaster University nearby too. Ranked in the UK Top 10 in both the Guardian and the Complete University Guide, and in the top 1% of universities globally, it’s one of the best higher educational establishments around.


Despite its size, Grange-over-Sands has things pretty good when it comes to transportation. It has its own railway station, served by The Furness Line, and a number of local bus services, which serve the town and surrounding area. The railway station offers direct transportation to a number of popular spots including Lancaster, Preston and Manchester. If you’re looking for a more peaceful way to travel around the town, why not get on your bike? Grange-over-Sands has a great cross-country cycle route, ideal for commuting and/or leisure.

If you regularly drive to work or work in the city, Grange-over-Sands is conveniently located for your needs. It’s just 20 minutes from the M6 and A65, with the main road access being the A590. For travel further afield, Leeds Bradford Airport and Manchester Airport are both within a two hour drive.

Amenities and Shopping

One of the best things about Grange-over-Sands is its quiet and quaint feel. You won’t find big brand retail stores and supermarkets dominating the landscape here. Instead, Grange-over-Sands is home to a few smaller supermarkets, which stock all your everyday essentials. For supermarkets like Asda and Sainsbury’s, head to Morecambe, and for your nearest Tesco Superstore, head to Carnforth – located seven miles away.

Supermarkets aside, there are plenty of other amenities here in Grange-over-Sands. You’ll find everything from one-of-a-kind shops to takeaways and bakeries as well as florists and banks. One of the popular haunts here is the No. 17 Restaurant and Lounge - a contemporary eatery with a great choice of drinks and wines. For the best in shopping head to Lancaster, located just a short drive away. With its Marketgate Shopping Centre and the St Nicholas Arcades, you’re sure to find all the goodies you’re after.
