Living in Flitwick: the local area guide

The ancient town of Flitwick is what’s typically considered a dormitory town. The town’s appealing proximity to Luton, Milton Keynes, Bedford and the Big Smoke mean that an influx of residents settle here as it’s romantically set in the Bedfordshire countryside. Here the smell of congestion doesn’t pollute the air and the streets aren’t chock-a-block with pedestrians frantically trying to get from A to B, yet the big cities are still within arm’s reach.

With a far-reaching history, the town is home to a few historical landmarks. The Church of St Peter and St Paul, a Grade 2 listed building, the 12th century Motte-and-bailey castle and Flitwick Manor House, another Grade 2 listed building, seek to unravel the town’s intriguing yet humble past. Whereas Flitwick Moor, a sprawling wetland, and Flitwick Wood, an ancient woodland with enchanting walks, engross outdoor lovers. All in all, the peace and quiet of the rural countryside coupled with the gorgeous properties and its geographic location, make Flitwick the perfect home base for commuters and young families seeking more space.

Demographics

According to the 2011 Census, around 13,234 people call Flitwick home. A majority of these residents work in either the professional, technical, administrative or secretarial sectors in Flitwick or the surrounding areas.

The town’s railway station, which also serves the town of Ampthill, therefore, sees a flock of commuters passing through its barriers each day. Once they’ve completed a hard day of work, most usually return to an unshared detached, semi-detached or terraced property – perfect for professionals or young families wishing to upgrade to a more roomy and affordable property.

Education

For young families wishing to retreat to the tranquil Bedfordshire countryside, four respectable schools – three lower and one middle school – exist in Flitwick. Flitwick Lower School and Kingsmoor Lower School are both popular with locals as the schools boast ‘Good’ Ofsted ratings and exceptional teaching standards. The third lower school, Templefield, was praised for its nurturing learning environment, but did receive a ‘Requires improvement’ verdict from Ofsted.

Upon completing middle school, pupils typically travel to nearby Ampthill to attend Redborne Upper School and Community College. The school offers secondary and post 16 education at a very high standard, a standard which was praised by Ofsted – who awarded them with an ‘Outstanding’ rating. 63% of pupils who attend this school often leave with excellent GCSE results and 73% leave with 3 or more A-Levels.

Transport

As Flitwick is a commuter town, the town’s railway station is naturally bustling with professionals rushing to make the frantic journey to and from work. Frequent and timely routes take rail users to Bedford, Luton, London St Pancras, Gatwick Airport, and Brighton.

Since Flitwick sits 5 miles away from Junction 12 on the M1 motorway, motorists are also well-served here. If, however, you prefer to roam around on a bus, Grant Palmer and Stagecoach both provide hourly services that take passengers to and from the neighbouring towns. However, these services only typically run during the weekdays and Saturday. Therefore, most locals either rely on the train service or their own car to get them where they need to be.

Amenities and shopping

Though Flitwick has no recognised town centre, there is a pleasing array of stores, eateries and pubs scattered around the historic parish. The four pubs – The Blackbirds, The Swan, The Crown and The Bumble Bee – are the perfect stomping ground for meeting and mingling with the neighbours and grabbing yourself a refreshing tipple in the process. Afterwards, Best Kebab, Dragonfly Chinese or any of the other takeaways dotted around town provide you with much-needed nourishment.

To complete your weekly food shop you have three options 1) the large Tesco supermarket 2) the Co-op or 3) the weekly outdoor market selling plump, fresh produce. To update your wardrobe, however, you’ll have to travel to either London, Luton or Bedford, where a plethora of high street stores and high-end boutiques await.
