Living in Bridgnorth: The Local Area Guide

Famous for its scenic views and funicular, Bridgnorth is tucked into the heart of Shropshire County. It’s built up into a sandstone cliff, with the town divided into what’s known as the high town up above and the low town down below. The River Severn runs through the town, and there are scenic trails, caves, and parks to explore. One of the undoubted highlights of Bridgnorth for visitors is its working Cliff Railway funicular. This is the oldest and the steepest inland funicular railway, dating back to 1892.

An attractive market town with cobbled streets and half-timbered architecture, picturesque Bridgnorth still holds regular markets. There’s a permanent indoor market held under the historic Town Hall. Weekly livestock and farmer’s markets also take place. Additional attractions include a ruined castle, two churches, and the greenery of Lavington Gardens. A stop on the Sustrans National Cycle Network’s Route 45, Bridgnorth is popular with both walkers and cyclers. It offers close proximity to the Shropshire Hills AONB, with additional scenic viewpoints.

Demographics

With a range of churches, schools, and independent businesses in town, Bridgnorth has a tightknit community. There are 5,501 households and a population of 12,079 in Bridgnorth according to the 2011 Census. Birmingham is within commuting distance, though there is also a significant percentage of self-employed workers. The top trades listed include Managers, directors, and senior officials, Skilled Trades, and Professional occupations. The demographics within Bridgnorth fall in line with the larger county of Shropshire. The largest religious groups reported by residents are Christian or no religion. Shropshire is considered to be less ethnically diverse than the national average, with 98% of the population identifying as white.

Education

Families within Bridgnorth are privileged when it comes to education. There’s a premium selection of highly rated schools, including the ‘outstanding’ St John’s Catholic. Its last Ofsted inspection found numerous strengths, including well-behaved pupils. Another popular school in the town is Castlefields Primary. This school was rated as ‘good’ overall in the most recent Ofsted report. It includes a nursery for children as young as three, and includes classrooms for Reception until Year 6.

After graduating from primary school, Bridgnorth students move on to the local secondary schools. Both Bridgnorth Endowed and Oldbury Wells secondary schools were rated ‘good’ by Ofsted in inspections. Bridgnorth Endowed is a specialist Technology College, opened in 1503. It now boasts an academy status and is a sixth form college as well as coeducational secondary school.

Transport

In addition to the historic funicular, there’s another vintage form of transportation in Bridgnorth. The Severn Valley Railway provides visitors with the chance to enjoy a traditional steam train ride as it travels between Kidderminster and Bridgnorth. The journey is 16 miles in total, with stunning valley views. This is the only rail service in town, but Bridgnorth residents can access commuter services in nearby towns like Telford, Cosford, Shrewsbury, or Wellington. There are also bus services in the area, operated by National Express and Arriva.

The easiest way to get around Shropshire is by car. Bridgnorth is just 45 minutes from Birmingham, with the M5 motorway only 30 minutes away. The M54 motorway is even closer, and Telford can be accessed in 15 minutes. For air travel, both Manchester and Birmingham airports are available.

Amenities and shopping

There’s a wide selection of shops within Bridgnorth, as well as its historic weekly markets. Over two dozen pubs are located in this bustling market town, including the New Inn and the Golden Lion. You don’t have to go far for entertainment, either. One notable landmark in town is the Majestic Cinema, which has changed little since it first opened in the 1930s. The Northgate Museum is another cultural destination, with changing historical exhibitions.

High street names include WHSmith and M & Co, but some of the best shops in Bridgnorth are its independent offerings. Cake shops, antique centres, and vintage boutiques rub shoulders with wine shops, cafes, and restaurants. For daily conveniences, there’s a Sainsbury’s supermarket positioned in the high town area.
