Leeds – the number one place for business, pleasure, learning and living.

Living in Leeds

Leeds is a major city in West Yorkshire. It is located on the River Aire and is the urban core of the City of Leeds metropolitan district. It is the third biggest city in England.

The city is considered to be a big success story. Over the last few years, Leeds has transformed from a northern industrial city into one of the most successful and vibrant cities in the UK.

Recent research shows that residents are extremely proud of Leeds and are aware of the city’s many benefits as a place to live, with 91% of people stating the city provides a great quality of life.

The Leeds skyline is continuously developing and evolving. The iconic Bridgewater Place development now rises 32 storeys above the city, soon to be joined by the 54 and 32-storey towers of Lumière, set to be the tallest residential development in Western Europe.

Leeds University has a good reputation, probably ranking within the top 10-15 in the UK. The ever-expanding university population makes for a robust rental and buy-to-let market in Headingley, which is close to the university.

Investors are also buying property in the more expensive areas close to the university, such as Little Woodhouse, Woodhouse and Woodhouse Moor Park. Other popular areas include Hyde Park, Burley Park and Headingley.

The Leeds-Liverpool canal has many new warehouse and new-build developments overlooking the waterfront – regeneration began some years ago. The new environment is ideal for city professionals who want to be close to work.

Transport

Leeds is at the heart of the UK motorway network, with excellent connections in all directions. The A1 and M1 link to the north and south, and the M62 to the east and west.

More than 90,000 people pass through Leeds City Train Station every day. As well as being West Yorkshire’s transport hub, Leeds has speedy connections from all major destinations in the UK.

Trains leave London Kings Cross for Leeds every half-hour on weekdays and take around two hours.

If air travel is more your style, Leeds Bradford International Airport provides domestic links and is also the city’s international gateway to the world, with daily flights from more than 65 destinations.

Leeds City Bus Station is located on York Street in the city centre and buses are frequent and efficient.

A “freecitybus” service provides complimentary travel around the city centre, running between the bus and train stations and the universities, business and shopping districts.

History and culture

Leeds was an agricultural market town in the Middle Ages, receiving its first charter in 1207. In the Tudor period, Leeds was mainly a merchant town, manufacturing woollen cloths and trading with Europe via the Humber estuary.

By the 20th century the social and economic status of Leeds changed with the creation of the academic institutions that are known today as the University of Leeds, Leeds Metropolitan University and Leeds Trinity & All Saints.

Sport remains central to city life, especially with the successes of the Rhinos in Rugby League and Leeds Carnegie in Rugby Union.

The rugby sides share their home at Headingley Carnegie Stadium with Michael Vaughan’s Yorkshire County Cricket Club. Football fans around the world will be familiar with Leeds United and Elland Road.

Leeds has a massive and diverse range of shops and department stores, including Harvey Nichols, and has become known as the Knightsbridge of the North.
