Railways
The Mendrisio station, managed by the Swiss Federal Railways and located along the Gotthard railway, has been the terminus of the Mendrisio-Varese international line since 2018 and of the Mendrisio-Malpensa international line since 2019.

Economy
Mendrisio is an important economic center in the Canton of Ticino and boasts the second highest tax revenue after Lugano. More than half of the employees are now cross-border commuters from Italy. Several shopping centers such as Fox Town are located here. The multinational goods company Metaltex is based in Mendrisio.

The Swiss appliance manufacturer Solis ag, based in Opfikon, produces household, coffee, beauty, and air conditioning appliances. Originally based in Zurich, production was moved to Mendrisio in 1943 following an appeal from the Federal Council to help the economically weakened Ticino region. From there the products are shipped all over the world.

The Vinattieri Ticinesi winery, which produces Merlot, is the largest in Switzerland. There are four gold refining factories. Both Italy and Switzerland are major markets for refined gold that is used in the production of watches and jewelry.
