Primelocation.com International Market Review – September 2009 Search Index
- Searches for international property increased by 32% between September 2008 and 2009
- The USA increased its share of searches for the fifth successive month to 19%
- Australia has fallen from 7th to 10th place over the last year
There was a 10% increase in the total number of international property searches in September compared to the previous month and a 32% increase compared to September last year, adding weight to the August data which appeared to show that confidence is returning to the market.
Four of the top five countries achieved a double-digit monthly percentage increase. The only exception was Spain, which still recorded a respectable 7% rise, suggesting that this month's growth was driven by the most traditionally popular destinations. Annual percentage change followed a similar pattern, with fifth-placed Portugal the only country to see a decrease, compared to first-placed France (46.8%) and third-placed USA (262.8%), which both saw significant rises.
By contrast the sixth to tenth-placed countries saw more muted results, with Bulgaria the anomaly, witnessing an impressive 22% monthly increase, the largest rise of any country in the top ten.
Ann Wright, International Development Manager at Primelocation.com, comments: "The results from September show a continuation of last month's trend of cautious but growing consumer confidence. The monthly rises are welcome but not entirely unexpected as September often sees a spike in interest as holidaymakers return from abroad. The very impressive growth compared to September last year, however, is a far more encouraging sign, suggesting that the underlying growth in interest in foreign property purchases indicated in last month's data will be sustained.
"The fact that interest is concentrated in the traditionally strong markets of France, Spain and the USA suggests a certain amount of caution remains amongst consumers, but these figures indicate that the overall outlook for the foreign homes market is very positive."
