Location

The site lies on the eastern edge of Aberfeldy and is bound to the southwest by Old Crieff Road and to the south-east by Old Wade's Road. The rear of the site to the north and west is contained by existing housing on Farragon which contains mostly single storey dwellings. The farmland beyond the site to the north-east slopes to the north and provides views of the valley and River Tay. There are some mature trees along the northern and western boundaries which partially screen the existing site from the adjacent houses.

The centre of the Victorian resort and market town of Aberfeldy is just a short walk away. Banking and medical facilities including a cottage hospital, a butcher, delicatessen bakery, clothing, gift and antique shops are within easy reach. Aberfeldy also offers cultural facilities such as an art gallery, a library, an award- winning independent bookshop and a community owned cinema. There is also a monthly farmer's market.
There are local primary schools and the refurbished Breadalbane Academy provides secondary schooling and community sports and leisure facilities. Aberfeldy is well placed for some of Scotland's best private schools with daily buses running to Morrison's Academy, Ardvreck School and Glenalmond College. There is a railway station at Pitlochry providing daily services to Edinburgh and Glasgow as well as services to London which includes the sleeper train. Pitlochry also provides a range of facilities including the renowned Festival Theatre. Nearby country hotels and restaurants include Fortingall, The Grandtully Hotel and The Ailean Chraggan.

Perthshire is world famous for its field sports. Red deer stalking and grouse shooting are available to let from nearby estates. The River Tay runs through Aberfeldy and is considered to be of the "Big Four" salmon rivers in Scotland, making it one of the most famous salmon fisheries in the world. For golfers, there are several local courses including Aberfeldy, Kenmore and Pitlochry and the venue for the 2014 Ryder Cup, Gleneagles, is 33 miles away. The nearby mountains such as Schiehallion are popular with walkers while water sports are available on Loch Tay.

Services to Edinburgh, Inverness, Perth and a sleeper service to London Euston from Dunkeld.

Directions

Description

The building is dated 1909 and was opened on 27 October 1910. It was erected under the auspices of Sir Donald Currie of Garth on a site granted free by the Marquis of Breadalbane. It was designed by Dunn & Watson to blend in with the local architecture, being single-storey, white-harled with crowstepped gables and green slate roof. It is an excellent example of sensitive planning and design in the Lorimeresque tradition. The hospital was extended in the 1920s and was transferred to the National Health Service in 1948. It was until recently Aberfeldy Community Hospital. Aberfeldy's original cottage hospital, known as 'The Home', opened in 1879 in Home Street.
This building was erected on a site donated by the Marquis of Breadalbane and opened on 27th October, 1910. The building has been altered somewhat over the past 100 years and has been extended to accommodate modern facilities. Some of the original features have been removed or changed slightly over this period. The hospital sits within a total site boundary of 0.36 hectares (0.89 acres) and is accessed form Old Crieff Road. The site slopes gently from East to West.
The building, boundary walls and the gate piers are Category C listed. The site itself sits within the settlement boundary of Aberfeldy and is currently designated as "White Land" within the Current Local Development Plan.
