Prime Location

Elche is a historic town situated roughly 23 km inland from Alicante, and is the capital of the El Baix district. It is the 20th biggest city in Spain and the third most inhabited in the Valencian Community after Valencia and Alicante, with around 228,647 residents. Elche has seen many empires take its helm over the centuries, with the Greeks establishing the first settlement in 600 BC, followed by the Carthaginians, the Romans and the Moors, until James II of Aragon claimed the city from them in the 13th century. Elche is a very popular tourist destination and enjoys around 325 sunny days each year, with an average annual temperature of 19.3 degrees Celsius.

Sights & Attractions

Palm trees are ubiquitous in Elche with over 200,000 in total, and further accentuate the exotic nature of the region. This assemblage of palm trees is known as the Palmeral of Elche, and has been proclaimed as a UNESCO heritage site since the year 2000. Huerto del Cura (Priest's Garden) is a stunning garden that features a vast amount of palm trees, as well as other Mediterranean and exotic plants from all over the globe, and is the perfect place to enjoy nature in a blissfully peaceful setting. Although the main part of Elche is situated away from the coastline, some beautiful beaches can be found just 15 minutes away, such as El Rebollo and El Carabassi.

The medieval festival, Festa d'Elx, is held in Elche annually on the 15th August, and features an array of music, fireworks, exhibitions, a market, and entertainment for children. It has been attributed the Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, and attracts thousands of visitors and locals alike to immerse them in the history of Elche. Elche is teeming with history, and in Vila Murada, many elements of the Moorish conquest can be sighted, with Arabic styled alleyways, streets and buildings.

Restaurants & Cafés

Elche is known for its delicious rice dishes, particularly 'a banda', which is cooked with fish stock, and 'con costra', a dish with sausages and egg, served as either a stew or dry. La Fica is a wonderful restaurant that offers these traditional dishes as well as a whole host of others, and is also known for its fresh seafood dishes. El Misteri D'anna is a fantastic gourmet restaurant with a lovely atmosphere, and has a certificate of excellence on TripAdvisor. Tapas lovers should take a visit to Meson El Granaino, as it has an extensive menu and a superb wine collection.

Restaurante Sansano's doubles up as a restaurant and café, and serves breakfast all the way to dinner, as well as alcoholic drinks. Mas Q Tapas is a similar venue in that it offers breakfast, brunch and dinner, but also has some amazing tapas dishes.

The Centro Comercial Abierto shopping centre can be located in the city centre, and there are over a hundred stores in a beautifully terraced location, with squares and gardens. Elche Business Park has a range of Ruta Outlets, where many bargain prices can be found for a variety of purchases. Elche is known for its footwear industry, and has many different stores dotted all over the city. For fresh fruit and vegetables such as dates and pomegranates, heading over to the market is the best bet, which is held every Monday.

El Altet Airport is situated just 15 km away from the city centre, and flights from the UK usually take just 2 and a half hours. Elche has 2 different train stations, Elche-Parque and Elche-Carrús, with both allowing access to neighbouring cities and towns. Although Elche is quite a compact place, there are a number of different bus services that function in and around the city, particularly to the beach and to Alicante, Benidorm and Valencia.
