The Murcia area guide

Sights and attractions

The capital of the autonomous south-eastern region in Spain that shares its name, Murcia is a cultural centre in a nation already famed for its history, art, music and literature. A University town in many regards, it’s also well known for its outstanding architecture, inspired by a range of influences from its Moorish rulers of close to a thousand years, to its Christian and Spanish rules of the last few hundred years.

Europe’s Orchard, as the city is known, is famed for its agricultural produce, and its culinary traditions stretch back for century upon century. The city of Murcia is one of the finest examples of what makes Spain quite so fantastic and one that we should all visit at some point in our lives. The city’s most iconic monument, the Cathedral of Murcia is an eclectic mix of styles, with each façade representing a masterpiece in of itself. Built on the ruins of a Mosque after the city’s conquering by Jaime I, it took hundreds of years to complete, ultimately having its towers finished in the 18th century. A mixture of Baroque, Renaissance and Gothic architecture, it is the centrepiece of the spectacle that is the city.

The city centre is typically defined by the city square that takes up the centre, surrounded by the city hall, amongst other buildings. Along the streets surrounding it, you will find a range of cafes, restaurants and stores, making any visit to the city centre one to remember. You might even find the famed social club, Casino, which is bedecked in the Moorish style of several centuries ago. It’s known across the city as much for its sumptuous architecture as it is for its role in the upper-class society over the decades.

Though the city is unlikely to tire anyone, those who wish to escape to the countryside do not have to go far. The surrounding region contains various golf courses, as well Spain’s largest lake, sprawling vineyards, and the chance to escape from tourist-packed streets.

Restaurants and cafes

For a taste of traditional tapas, you should visit the relatively young restaurant known as Madre De Dios. They serve moreish dishes that are sure to have you running back for more. More tapas options can be found at a majority of the restaurants in the city, but like Madre De Dios, truly outstanding tapas can be tried at El Pasaje de Zabalburu. With it’s a la carte menu as sumptuous as its small plate menu, it’s not to be missed, whether for lunch or dinner.

Restaurant Salzillo, named after the sculptor, offers more Mediterranean cooking, alongside fresh ingredients from the surrounding region. Of particular note are its steaks, though no matter what you order, disappointment is certainly not on the menu.

As one of Spain’s largest cities, you can expect to find any and everything within the region. From designer fashion outlets to High Street fashion such as Mango and Zara, there’s something for everyone, whether you simply walk the streets or visit one of its malls.

Some weekly markets can be found as well, many of them showcase the crops and crafts of the surrounding region. They are the perfect place to immerse yourself in the local culture as well as nab yourself the freshest of items and one-off gems.

The main airport, which flies internationally and connects to much of Europe, is found nearly 28 miles outside of Murcia. A second airport can be found in Alicante, which can be reached by either bus, taxi or car hire.

Bus services in the city are both sophisticated and expansive, helped also by the well-built motorway network and the tram system. Car hire is available throughout the city and at the major train stations and the airport.
