The Tenerife Area Guide

Sights and attractions

If exotic is what you are after, as a relocation destination, it doesn’t get more exotic than Tenerife. The largest of the Canary Islands, Tenerife has become famous for its breathtaking volcanic landscape, beautiful sandy beaches and its popularity as a tourist destination. While roughly 899,000 people call Tenerife home on a permanent basis – the massive seasonal influx of tourists sees this number grow significantly every year.

Tenerife’s impressive natural beauty means that world-class sightseeing opportunities can be found at every turn. The Teide National Park is ripe for exploration and the volcanic nature of the island means that it is home to a stunningly diverse, and at times Martian looking range of flora and fauna. There are certainly few places on Earth serving up such awe-inspiring landscapes!

Another must-see experience is the Carnival of Santa Cruz. The Carnival takes place in February each year and is attended by upwards of 250,000 revellers, making it one of the largest Carnivals in the world. In fact, officials are attempting to have the Carnival recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in order to entice even more people to make the journey over to experience it.

Restaurants and cafes

As you would expect from a place that is so popular as a tourist destination, Tenerife is home to a whole host of restaurants, all of which serve up brilliant interpretations of traditional Canarian food, as well as a range of fantastic international dishes. Meat and fish make up a large part of local cuisine and both will often be accompanied by Canarian wrinkly potatoes, as well as Mojo – a traditional sauce that comes in a range of colours, flavours and textures depending on the ingredients used.

There are two Michelin-star restaurants in Tenerife. One such restaurant is Kabuki, which can be found at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Abama. As you might have guessed from the name, Kabuki serves up a range of mouth-watering Japanese cuisine – a lot of which is infused with traditional western dishes – and makes for a delicious culinary experience.

There is certainly no shortage of places to shop on the island of Tenerife. The Plaza del Duque in Costa Adeje is one of the more high-end shopping centres on Tenerife and is a great place to go if designer fashion and jewellery is what you’re after. Be warned, though, goods here certainly don’t come cheap! The CC Meridiano in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is a more reasonably priced shopping centre and is home to a number of great fashion outlet stores. You will even be able to find a Primark!

In the resort town of Playa de Las Americas lies the Safari Centre. Being in a resort town, the Safari Centre is understandably a popular place with tourists. Here you will be able to find a number of high-end bars, restaurants and clubs – so if a night out is what you are after, this might be the place to go.

The easiest way of travelling to and from Tenerife is by plane. The island is home to two airports, which are located at either end of the island. Reina Sofia Airport lies to the south and is located in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona. It is the largest airport in the Canary Islands. In the north, you will find Los Rodeos Airport. Both airports provide regular flights back to mainland Europe and beyond.

Buses are widely available to take commuters to multiple locations both within the cities as well as between cities. The Tenerife Tram runs between Santa Cruz de Tenerife and the neighbouring city of La Laguna. A large number of taxis also run in the numerous cities on Tenerife and often provide the best means of getting from the airport to your accommodation due to the fact that they tend to be cheaply priced.
