The Alvor area guide

Sights and attractions

Historic architecture, a modern riverfront promenade, and a large, sheltered beach are a few of the attractions in Alvor, Portugal. Nestled in the Algarve region at the estuary of the River Alvor, Alvor is a traditional fishing village. Its colourful harbour is still a main centre of activity, with vibrant waterfront eateries and fishing boats bobbing in the water.

The central Praça da República retains many of the village’s original charms and visitors can also view the ruins of Alvor castle as well as a well-preserved sixteenth-century church. Modern Alvor revolves around the newly paved riverfront, which is lined with palm trees and inviting beach bars. The Praia de Alvor beach is another star attraction for visitors to the region, offering a bevy of café-bars, tourist facilities, and vast expanses of pristine sands to soak up the sun in.

One of the greatest attractions in Alvor is simply the laid-back lifestyle it affords. Stroll down the riverfront promenade to enjoy the views, or spend the day at the local Praia de Alvor beach. It is well sheltered, being sandwiched between the salty Atlantic waters and the River lagoon. This makes it ideal for swimming and water sports. You’ll find all beachside amenities you could want or need here, including cafes, sunbeds and shade-giving umbrellas.

Local water sports include windsurfing, sailing, and small watercrafts like pedalos for hire. Within the old town, top sights include the Church of the Divine Saviour with its notable Rococo and Manueline Architecture, as well as the ancient ruins of Alvor Castle. Venture slightly out of town and you’ll find a number of adventure and family-oriented attractions, including water parks, dolphin watching, canoeing down the Alvor River, and fishing trips.

Restaurants and cafes

From Indian to Chinese, there’s a range of international flavours on offer in Alvor’s restaurants and cafes. Naturally, traditional Portuguese cuisine is also a popular option, particularly in the seafood restaurants near the harbour.

You’ll be able to enjoy the freshest catch of the day grilled to perfection over a stunning sunset view. One such venue is A Lota Restaurant, which offers succulent lobster and panoramic harbour views from its terrace.

You will also be able to find two locations for Indian Hut, which serves tempting curries and is a firm favourite with locals and visitors alike. If, however, you are on the hunt for a classic steak experience, a visit to Big Red’s is a must.

Alvor may be small but it is stocked with many convenient services for residents, including a post office and local markets. The Alvor market in the town centre offers a rainbow of fruit and vegetables, while the fish market is a bustling centre of trade in the morning.

For stocking up on household essentials, there is the local supermarket, Pingo Doce. Large, modern shopping malls are located in nearby Portimão, including the Continente Shopping Centre and Aqua Portimao.

Alvor is an ideal location for stocking up on many of the Algarve’s most famous handicrafts, including jewellery, hand-painted pottery and embroidered linens. You’ll find a number of souvenir stalls in the old town centre and there is even the chance to watch the artistic process take place.

The closest airport to Alvor is located in nearby Faro and there are numerous transportation options linking the village with the rest of the Algarve region and beyond.

From Faro Airport, you’ll be able to find car hire services as well as local buses and airport transfers. One local company providing daily service directly to Alvor is Renex, while Eva Transportes provides a bus service calling in neighbouring Portimão, which is also where the closest train station is located.

The Vai e Vem City bus links Portimão with Alvor, operating regular bus services between the two towns. The village is easy to navigate on foot and taxi stands are located in the town centre.
