Appignano
Appignano is in the municipality of Castiglione Messer Raimondo. It rises 364 metres above sea level, just north of the River Fino, and has a small population of 126. Appignano hosts some surviving fortifications and the parish church is worth a visit.
The village has minimal facilities including a coffee shop and mini-market, but the larger towns of Castiglione and Bisenti are only minutes away by car.
Castiglione messer raimondo
A typical medieval village, located on a narrow hill overlooking the Fino River and dominated by the majestic Gran Sasso massif.
This fortified town is 306 metres above sea level and boasts an ancient history. Local archaeological remains prove that is was inhabited since pre-Roman times. Since then, the prominence of medieval sandstone buildings ensure that it retains a characterful appearance.
With a population of 2,285, the town has a couple of restaurants, bars, grocery store, butcher, bank, post office and pharmacy. There is also a weekly market.
August is the time for celebrations with the Feast of San Donato at the beginning of the month and the festival celebrating Pecorino cheese and other local dishes at the end.
