Property description

Description

Elegant apartment located on the main floor of a historic building in the center of Sanremo. The property, distributed on three sides of the building, has a surface area of over 900 m2, and it is characterized by numerous communicating halls, a service area and a large room overlooking Via Cavour and Piazza Borea, with access to a large and bright terrace. The interiors are characterized by frescoes, wooden decorations and original floors. Inside the property there is a small chapel with a marble altar and a statue of the Immaculate Virgin, attributed to the sculptor Giacomo Antonio Polsonelli. The building was built in different phases over the centuries, starting from a late-medieval nucleus up to its current conformation dating back to between the 17th and 18th centuries. Over time, the Palace has hosted numerous princes, kings and other important personalities, including Queen Elizabeth of Spain, King Charles Emmanuel III, Pope Pius VII and Prince Philip of Edinburgh. Furthermore, the property was home to the city's Civic Museum until 2017. Due to the progressive alienation of the surrounding gardens, today the Palace directly overlooks Via Matteotti, the main street of the city, a short distance from the Ariston Theatre. The façades are characterized by a large Renaissance-style cornice which harmonises with the remaining Baroque-Mannerist decorative apparatus. The main marble portal is surmounted by a statue of the Madonna by Montorsoli, a pupil of Michelangelo, also author of the marble statue of Saint John the Baptist which surmounts the second marble portal overlooking Via Cavour. The monumental atrium of the Palace, in Genoese style, features marble columns and balustrades, a short staircase and vaulted ceilings. The internal halls are decorated with frescoes attributed to the painter Maurizio Carrega, while the vaults are adorned with late seventeenth-century frescoes by the painter Giovanni Battista Merano.
