Description of the building

The apartment (80 sqm – 861 sqft) is located on the second floor of a historic building is made up of entrance hall, living room with fireplace and kitchenette, hallway with two bedrooms and bathroom.

State and finishes

The apartment has been finely restored so to preserve untouched its main and typical characteristics. Outside walls are made out of stone while on the inside one can see wooden beams, terracotta floors, stone fireplaces and bathroom with small squared stone tiles. An ample archway in the living room, closed with a window, brightens the room and offers a unique view over the surrounding countryside.

History of the town

The apartment is located inside a small medieval hamlet built on top of a hill. The origin of the center is unknown, probably dating back to peoples akin to the Castellieri culture of Northern Italy, but the first confirmed proofs of the existence of the hamlet dates back to the early Middle Ages. Between the 11th and the 12th century, the hamlet was a point of contention between Orvieto and Marsciano, only to be finally conquered by Perugia. At the time, the hamlet was referred to as a villa (with the Latin meaning of ‘fortified farm’) with a census of 24 families. A hundred years later, walls was built around the town (150 m and still visible nowadays) and the villa officially became a castrum (not really a ‘castle’ but a ‘walled town’) and with this title the town is mentioned in documents after 1380 ad.

Frequent wars in Central Italy damaged the town multiple times and multiple times Perugia ordered a tax-exemption for the town to allow its recovery (1440,1455,1470,1475). However, none of these laws was enough to prevent the constant depopulation of the hamlet which counted in 1656 no more than 85 people and was completely depopulated by 1960.

As of now, the hamlet has been finely recovered and restored and offers a unique possibility for a travel in the past.

Use and potential uses

The apartment, given its location, is perfect for anyone looking for a quiet life in a small town where time seems to have stopped to the Middle Ages. The short distance from the services makes the apartment suitable even as a full-year residence and not just as a holiday home.
