Property description

In 1647, Sir John Colleton, an English Royalist, left England and purchased 90 acres of land in Barbados as his refuge. Although Sir John Colleton, a sugar planter, suffered difficulties under Cromwell’s Commonwealth – as did many Royalists at the time – he managed to extend his holdings to some 220 acres between 1651 and 1660. As sugar became the island’s most lucrative export, Colleton Estates prospered with the fortunes of Barbados, then regarded as “the brightest jewel in the British crown.”

Colleton Great House was one of the very few pre-1800 buildings to withstand the Great Hurricane of 1831, due to its thick walls and parapet-styled roof. In the1980’s the property was bought over by an oil legend who immediately commenced renovations on the site. During the restoration process, care was taken to retain the original façade of the buildings and as much of the original interior as possible, to preserve the rich history of this beautiful property which echoes the heritage of Barbados. The stables were transformed into the then owner’s personal museum, housing some 160 artefacts from Papua New Guinea, including tribal art, paintings, sculpture, furniture, carpets and glasswork.

Colleton Great House remains a genuinely impressive and stately residence, the calibre of which is difficult to match in Barbados or elsewhere. Recently opened as a guesthouse, this elegant property is an ideal investment opportunity welcoming guests from around the world who are intrigued by its historic old world charm. Set in seven acres of beautiful tropical gardens, the estate is composed of a grand, five-bedroom plantation-style home which consists of ground floor and first floor, plus an expansive basement. Additional accommodations include a lovely two-bedroom cottage which enjoys magnificent views of the West Coast, as well as a three-bedroom home comprising 1,550 sq. Ft. The expansive stables, which were converted into a museum, complete the property. While the property is offered unfurnished, the owners are prepared to negotiate the sale of much of the historic furniture and artwork.

The rolling, verdant lawns lend an atmosphere of tranquil seclusion, while in actuality Colleton Great House is located a mere 10-minute drive away from the amenities of the charming Speightstown, and approximately 20 minutes’ drive from Holetown – host to some of the island’s finest restaurants, luxury retailers, and picturesque beaches.

Colleton Great House currently runs as a guest house and provides the opportunity for a good income stream.
