The name of Cambridge is synonymous with education thanks to its status as one of the UK’s two premier university cities – the lighter of the two ‘blues’ in the boat race. As well as its 31 colleges, the University also houses the world-famous Cavendish Laboratory which has spawned 29 Nobel prizes; King’s College Chapel, renowned for its carol concerts and often used as the symbol of Cambridge; and the Cambridge University Library with over 8 million books. The city is also the site of one of the Anglia Ruskin University’s two campuses. Education is one reason why families choose to relocate to Cambridge. As well as being home to one of the UK’s top universities, there are outstanding schools for all ages in Cambridge including Hills Road Sixth Form College. Located just around the corner from Great Kneighton, the College is consistently ranked among the top three state sixth form colleges. In 2010, the College had an A-level pass rate of 99.7%, 52% of which were A* or A. At its most recent OFSTED inspection, teaching and learning was judged to be ‘outstanding’, the top grade, in the eleven departments inspected. Leadership and management were also reported as ‘outstanding’. It therefore became the first centre in the country to receive ‘designated outstanding’ status.
The Cambridge sport and leisure scene is as exciting as it is energetic with superb facilities for an abundance of indoor and outdoor activities. From parks and pools to clubs and cinemas, leisure life in Cambridge embraces all things – including the quintessentially Cambridge, such as punting on the Cam. Sporting challenges are as much a part of the city’s culture as the spires of King’s College Chapel – the Chariots of Fire race is now one of Cambridgeshire’s largest annual charity events – and from such traditions through to family activities and extreme sports, there’s always something for players and spectators alike. Cambridge city centre has recently been transformed by the opening of the Grand Arcade, a stylish sky-lit shopper’s paradise which houses the best of designer stores and high-street names – as well as cafés and restaurants – all under one beautifully designed glass roof. The city’s smaller streets still house a wealth of independent shops: unique Aladdin’s caves filled with everything from hand-crafted jewellery to antiquarian books, traditional toys to objets d’art. All the major supermarkets can be found in Cambridge including Waitrose, Sainsbury’s, Asda and Tesco. Market Hill hosts daily markets and on Sundays a Farmers’ Market with arts, crafts and antiques.
