Soham has many historic buildings - some are now pubs and restaurants - including two windmills and the medieval St Andrew's Parish Church. This vibrant community has leisure and interest groups for all ages and an annual Pumpkin Fair. The Ross Peers Sports Centre offers a great range of sports and fitness and Soham Town Rangers has senior and youth teams. For walkers there are 50 miles of local footpaths. Race-goers will enjoy the National Horseracing Museum at nearby Newmarket, or visit the magnificent Cathedral with its famous Stained Glass Museum in the historic city of Ely and take a trip along the River Great Ouse. The county city of Cambridge with its beautiful architecture, majestic college buildings and museums is also within easy reach.
Soham has two schools for primary age pupils, The Weatheralls Primary School and St Andrew's Primary School, which is only half a mile from Morris Gardens. For senior pupils Soham Village College is a comprehensive school with Academy status that caters for students aged 11 to 16 years. For further education Ely College and Newmarket Academy both offer sixth form facilities.
Soham town centre has a range of local shops including post offices, banks, chemists, florists and Asda and Co-op supermarkets. In Newmarket The Guineas shopping centre offers nearly 50 local and national stores including Argos, Boots, M&S and Clarks. There's also a weekly Charter Market. A short bus or car ride to Ely and you'll find small independent shops alongside national chain stores. The city also has an array of regular markets as well as leading supermarkets including Watirose, Sainsbury's and Tesco. At Cambridge the Grand Arcade has 60 retailers over two floors and a flagship John Lewis store. The Grafton and Lion Yard Shopping Centres together boast a further 100 stores.
Soham is just off the A142 that runs from Ely, 9 miles in the north, to Newmarket, 7 miles, to the south. From Newmarket take the A14 east for Bury St Edmunds and Ipswich, or south west for Cambridge. There you can join the M11 at junctions 12,13 and 14 for London and the M25. Bus services run regularly from Soham to Cambridge and Newmarket and trains run from Ely to Cambridge and King's Cross, London, taking just over an hour. Services also run to Norwich, Ipswich, King's Lynn, Birmingham and Stansted Airport. For air travel, Stansted is just 40 miles.
