The name Cleobury Mortimer is believed to derive from the contraction of the Old English clifu meaning a steep place and bury meaning a fortified settlement. Mortimer comes from Ranulph de Mortimer of Normandy to whom the land was granted after The Norman Conquest.

Cleobury has a significant entry in The Doomsday Book and was the vicinity of at least two castles.

Known as The Gateway to Shropshire Cleobury Mortimer is a thriving market town and was granted it's market charter in 1253. The busy high street (A4117) has many varied shops including an ironmongers, restaurants, public houses, a superb bakery, Lloyds Bank, Post Office, the famous 12th century St. Mary's church renowned for its crooked spire, the 4 star Talbot Hotel in the town centre.

Cleobury Mortimer golf club is a lovely 27 hole course in a clover pattern of nine holes, a lovely course and welcoming club house.

Birmingham 28.6 miles, Ludlow 11.6 miles, Worcester 20.4 miles, Kidderminster 11.7 miles.
