Living in Roadwater: The Local Area Guide

Roadwater, formerly known as Rode, is a small village in the North Eastern edge of Exmoor National Park in the Brendon Hills. This tranquil location, nestled cozily into a stretch of woodland is named in quite a literal sense as its main road runs harmoniously parallel with the Washford River. In the 18th and 19th centuries, this river was lined with mills and not so far from Roadwater was the Old Mineral Line which in its day would transport Iron Ore from the Brendon Hills mines to other parts of the UK. Manor Mill still stands today as a Grade II listed building as well as the Two Rivers Paper Mill.

Roadwater Village Hall, which was constructed in 1927, is a great place to get to know the village. It hosts a number of events as well as having its own local cinema that screens classics for the nostalgia fans and has a children’s matinee that shows kids favourites both past and present. Roadwater also hosts a yearly fete which really adds to the sense of community.

The district of West Somerset totals approximately 35,300 whereas the general region of Roadwater is thought to be inhabited by about 7,036 people with the most people falling in the 45 – 59 age bracket and almost 99% of the residents are white British. Of these residents, an impressively high 94.4% consider themselves to have fair to very good health.

Roadwater village is in a great location for nearby schools, with some great options being within a 30 to 45-minute drive away. There are 2 ‘Outstanding’ schools a little bit further out, one being Heathfield Community School in West Monkton which provides education from year seven through to year thirteen and is only around 45 minutes away. The Castle School in Taunton provides education from Nursery level through to Sixth Form and you can drive there in under 40 minutes.

Roadwater is very close to the B3190, which runs through the East of Exmoor National Park as well as having the A39 to the North which provides a useful connection to the rest of Somerset and its inviting features. There are also smaller roads leading from Roadwater that run through the heart of the beautiful National Park if you enjoy taking scenic Sunday drives. To get to the nearest stretch of seaside you only need to drive 15 minutes North until you reach Doniford Bay, or alternatively you are only 20 minutes away from the slightly larger seaside resort of Minehead. The location of Roadwater on the edge of Exmoor National Park means that it is a great, accessible location to not only the beauty of Exmoor’s Hills and its Heritage Coast but also the Quantock Hills, which can be reached in around 20 minutes.

Amenities and Shopping

Roadwater, through all the calm and peacefulness, also has a quiet buzz of activity. The centre of the village contains a small shop and post office and a recreational area. The local pub, The Valiant Soldier, provides a warm and friendly atmosphere in a traditional countryside Inn with pub games and hearty food. Further up the Road towards Lower Roadwater there is a conveniently located Garage. If you require a wider variety, then there is a large Tesco Superstore at Minehead that is only about 15 minutes away by car.
