North London Area Guide

North London incorporates most of the historic central areas including the City, the West End, the East End and the majority of the London Underground network. For the purposes of the London Plan, the North London sub region currently consists of Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Hackney, Haringey, Islington and Westminster.

North London is considered to be a fashionable urban area popular with celebrities and hipsters. The area has a wealth of character but with a contemporary environment that sets it apart from the rest of the capital. A diverse and multicultural place to live and work, the population here is steadily increasing. With an eclectic mix of shopping, entertainment and business areas, hot spots include Haringey where Green Lanes, the longest road in London, stretches from Turnpike Lane underground station to Newington Green.

Within the district there is a combination of inner city urbanities and attractive suburbs as well as satellite towns. The street scenes across the North London area can range from one bedroom council and housing association properties through to terraced houses, new modern housing developments and large period townhouses.

Demographics

The six boroughs that make up North London currently have a resident population of approximately 1.4 million people. This population is larger than many UK and European cities and the district is one of the most multi-cultural areas in Britain with local people speaking up to 300 different languages.

The population figures are expected to swell by more than 160,000 people by 2016 as redevelopment plans continue to attract newcomers to the area.

Education

There are a vast number of primary schools across the whole of North London ranging from satisfactory through to outstanding according to Ofsted reports. Secondary schools are also plentiful and include a mix of single sex and coeducation schools and academies such as Camden School for Girls, Highbury Fields School and Highbury Grove School to name but a few.

The College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London is one of the many providers of further and higher education in the area, as is London Metropolitan University.

Transport

As with much of the capital, North London's roads are affected by congestion, particularly at peak times. There is access to and from the M25 and the Tottenham Hale gyratory to the south, however public transport is usually considered the easiest and quickest way to get around the area.

Bus services serve multiple routes across North London and the district benefits from 27 London Underground stations on the Piccadilly, Northern, Victoria and Central lines. There are also 40 mainline stations in North London offering access to services including the Great Northern and the West Anglia lines.

Residents of all North London boroughs aged 60 or over, or aged under 60 with an eligible disability, are entitled to apply for a Freedom Pass which offers free access to public transport services. 

North London is accessible for cyclists and pedestrians, and nearby air travel connections are situated at airports including London City Airport, London Gatwick, and London Heathrow.

Amenities and Shopping

There is a wide and diverse retail offering across the North London area including Camden Passage Market which features shops and stalls specialising in everything from antiques and furnishings to vintage clothing. Finsbury Park is a popular location for fashion bargains and many wholesalers sell direct to the public at knock-down prices on Saturday mornings.

The Blackstock Road area runs between Islington and Hackney and benefits from an array of independent outlets, and the N1 Shopping Centre is a shopping and entertainment complex in Islington that boasts a wide selection of national retail brands and eateries. Wood Green in Haringey is one of the main shopping areas in the district, and is home to Shopping City and a two-floor market hall. Highgate is a popular choice for its antiques stores, galleries and specialist shops.

Crouch End and Finchley are key destinations for some of North London's best restaurants, cafés, bars and gastro pubs. Sporting and leisure facilities are widely available across the area as are green spaces and parks.
