Leicester thrived during the Industrial Revolution and it hasn't done so badly afterwards either. While much of its manufacturing base has been wiped out in the post-war years, its excellent transport links have helped Leicester replace old businesses with new, particular engineering, clothing, textiles and shoes. Several big firms have their headquarters in the area, including Next, British Gas and DHL.
The city has benefited from a lot of development. Several post-war housing projects have given the city housing estates such as Beaumont Leys and Braunstone. The city centre also has a number of new shopping centres such as the Haymarket, the Shire Shopping Centre and Highcross.
Demographics
Leicester has achieved fame as one of the curry capitals of the UK due to its large South Asian population. The city has opened its arms to a large number of other immigrant communities, including Poles and Somalis.
Its population currently stands at just under 330,000, of which around 50% identify as white British. This incredible mix of communities happened rapidly in the sixties and seventies with the Asian population quadrupling in a decade from the early seventies to eighties.
While this dramatic change hasn't been without its problems (and while racial tension and resentment can still be found on some estates) Leicester is known as one of the most racially harmonious cities in the UK. The city has managed to achieve this by promoting a policy of equality at all times and involves community leaders at every level of local government.
Education
Schools in Leicester have not had an illustrious history and have only started to see improvement in the past 10 to 15 years. There has been a lot of upheaval in the system, but fortunately most state schools, including Beaumont Leys School, English Martyrs Catholic School and The Roundhill Academy are rated 'good' by Ofsted. The recently opened Samworth Enterprise Academy achieves results under the national average but attainment is rising.
Transport
Leicester is near the M1 motorway, which runs North to South down towards London. International travel is possible from the nearby East Midlands Airport which features routes to major European cities such as Amsterdam and Berlin. Alternatively, if you want an alternative route to the continent, you can take the train to London St Pancras and the Eurostar to Paris or Brussels.
Train links to London are good, with a large number of services running every hour - the journey takes around an hour and a half. Direct train routes also go to Luton, Lincoln, Leeds, York, Cambridge, Stansted Airport and Birmingham.
Amenities and Shopping
Shopping in the city centre concentrates on two shopping centres, the Haymarket and Highcross.
Shops gracing the Haymarket include Primark, TK Maxx, Gregg's and H&M. Highcross features big chains such as John Lewis, Zara and Apple as well as other more upmarket brands such as Hugo Boss, G-Star and Lacoste and a multiplex cinema.
Leicester has one of the biggest covered markets in the UK with fresh fruit and vegetables, meat and cheese. Leicester Lanes has the biggest concentration of independent shops in the city, including fashion, beauty, music and homewares.
