Prime Location Camden Town Area Guide

Camden Town is a district in the London Borough of Camden, which is one of the 12 Inner London boroughs. In the late 18th century, it was set up as a residential area but with improvements in transport, such as the railway and canals, Camden quickly developed into a busy centre within London.

Nowadays Camden is known throughout the world as a centre of alternative fashion. Its many alternative music venues make this area one of London’s most popular concert locations and visitors are certain to find something to fit their tastes, whatever they may be. The district has attracted many a famous resident such as Amy Winehouse, Dylan Thomas and Alan Bennett, who all lived in the area.

Demographics

The Ward of Camden Town with Primrose Hill had a population of 12,613 at the 2011 Census. This represented an 8% increase from the figure at the previous Census, which was less than the average for London of 14%. The slight increase in numbers is predominantly down to increased migration from the enlarged European Union.

The average house price for the Borough of Camden is a whopping £837,550, which is almost double the London average and almost quadruple the national average. It will come as little surprise, with that in mind, that this area attracts high earners.

Education

There are 41 primary schools and 11 secondary schools in the Borough of Camden. Of the 11 secondary schools, all but one had more than 50% of their pupils gaining at least 5 good GCSEs. Three of the best performing of the eleven secondary schools are independent schools, 2 of which achieved 100%: South Hampstead High School and University College School. More than half of all residents over the age of 16 have qualifications at least equivalent to A and AS levels.

The Borough of Camden is home to University departments from some of the capital’s most prestigious institutions. The University of London and University College London are both present here as are many others, most notably the Open University in London. Meetings with tutors from the Open University are held in areas throughout Camden.

Transport

As you would expect of an area located in Central London, Camden Town is extremely well connected via the extensive London transport network. Camden Town Underground station is served by Northern Line services to all destinations. The station can become extremely crowded at weekends however as it is a small station not really built to cope with how popular the area has become. Mornington Crescent and Chalk Farm stations are not too far away as alternative to the busy Camden Town interchange.

Camden Road serves the London Overground and network linking Camden with Stratford and Richmond. The nearest National Rail station is at Kentish Town for local services and London Euston and St. Pancras stations are a stop or two away by tube or a 20 minute walk away for national and international connections. Many buses serve the Camden Town area and the majority of night services for North London call at Camden Town.

Amenities and shopping

As we’ve previously alluded to, Camden is one of the centres for alternative culture in Central London and it has a wide range of markets and alternative stores from the alternative and vintage markets of Camden Stables to the arts and crafts at Camden Lock markets and the international food markets on Inverness Street.
