History of the area

Harlow’s distinctive character reflects its designation as a New Town in 1947. Architect and planner Sir Frederick Gibberd developed a master plan that combined residential neighbourhoods with a central shopping area and substantial areas of open landscape.

The earlier settlement, now known as Old Harlow, retained its identity alongside the post-war development. Harlow Town Park, planned by Gibberd and landscape architect Dame Sylvia Crowe, began opening in 1957 and remains an enduring expression of the importance placed on green space within the town.
