Location Summary
Hersden is a village situated to the east of Canterbury in Kent, South East England. Originally established as a planned coalmining village in the 1920s, Hersden lies on the A28 between Canterbury and the Isle of Thanet. The Kent Coalfield was historically the main source of employment for the village until the closure of the Kent colliery in the 1980s.

The parish of Hersden was formed on 1 April 2019 from parts of Sturry, Chislet and Westbere. The Ashford to Ramsgate railway line runs through the parish to the south of the village. The railway formerly served the colliery, with Chislet Colliery Halt railway station operating between 1919 and 1971.

The village offers a range of local amenities and community facilities. These include a village hall incorporating a social club, the former Anglican and Methodist church which is now a community centre, and St Dunstan Roman Catholic Church, which opened in 1935. Hersden also has a primary school, doctors' surgery, bowls club and bmx track.

For everyday convenience, there is a village shop incorporating a Post Office located at the eastern end of The Avenue, approximately 160 metres east of the property. Approximately 60 metres to the west is the Chislet Colliery Welfare Club, providing a bar and dance/entertainment hall. The club regularly hosts live music, community events and parties for both children and adults, providing a valuable hub for local social activities.

There is also a large Chinese restaurant located on the A28, approximately 200 metres south-east of the property, providing an additional local dining option. Canterbury Industrial Park is located to the west of the village, occupying the former spoil heap associated with the colliery. Further development is also planned in connection with the 'Hoplands' estate, which is set to bring additional facilities to the area, including a new primary school, Co-op, Harvester, pharmacy, community square, Canterbury College Centre, dentist and business parks.

Hersden therefore combines the character and history of a former mining community with a growing range of amenities and facilities, while benefiting from its convenient position close to Canterbury and the A28, providing access towards Canterbury and the Isle of Thanet.
