Some houses get dressed up for sale. This one has simply been lived in well. A freehold semi-detached home on Oakdene Park, it has raised a family, hosted the birthdays and the big family meals, absorbed years of football and table tennis, and remained an easy house to live in throughout.

The first thing you notice is the light. With windows on three sides, it moves around the house as the day goes on, filling the front rooms first thing and pouring into the conservatory later. The front sitting room is the cosy heart of the house in winter, the room for the sofa, the television and the darker evenings. The large through-room is the flexible one; it works just as well for a quiet weeknight as it does with twenty-five people sitting down to eat, which has happened here more than once over the years. There has even been a Sofar Sounds gig in it.

The kitchen sits at the centre of daily life, looking out towards the garden, the place where the day starts and ends. But the conservatory really defines how the house lives. It is the bridge between inside and out, used constantly for coffee, working, eating and simply watching the garden. Two separate sets of doors open outside, so on a warm day you can throw both wide and let the air move straight through. In summer the conservatory, the decking and the garden become one continuous space. In winter it earns its keep another way, with the table tennis and pool tables coming indoors and the room turning into something close to an indoor sports hall. Extra radiators keep it warm in the colder months, and the sellers say there's a particular pleasure in sitting inside and hearing rain on the roof.

The garden is private in a way that is rare for London. You can sit out and feel genuinely removed from everything. The sun rises behind the decking and tracks around the house through the day, so the decking holds the light into the evening, with the sun setting towards the golf course while you eat. Mature trees and planting mean there is always a shady corner to find when it is hot. This is where the family has gathered on summer evenings for years, with barbecues, the trampoline, and endless games of football; from spring onwards, it becomes, in effect, another room.

Upstairs, there are four bedrooms, a family bathroom, and a second bathroom, with a separate WC downstairs. The bedrooms at the back are the quietest in the house; you wake to birdsong rather than traffic. The main bedroom stays pleasantly cool even in warm weather. The small back bedroom has quietly become the best home office in the house, looking over the garden and towards the brook, close enough to hear the birds through an open window and far enough from the living space downstairs to feel properly separate. For anyone working from home, it is a calm place to do it, and it doesn't feel remotely like sitting in the middle of London.

The practical side has been looked after. The house was rewired in 2010, and a new gas condensing boiler, a Greenstar 8000 Life, went in in 2022, running conventional whole-house central heating. A Megaflo system in the loft takes care of the hot water, while Virgin Media broadband has comfortably handled working from home, streaming, and normal family life. Off-street parking sits directly in front of the house, with an Ohme home charger already fitted, so charging an electric car is straightforward. There is also a garage, invaluable for bikes, tools, and the accumulated kit of family life, so storage never has to come out of the rooms indoors. The loft is a real opportunity; it has never needed converting, but a well-planned conversion could add a bedroom and bathroom, with the house's position offering elevated views out towards the brook, the treetops, and the golf course (STPP).

The location is where the house quietly makes its case. You can leave the front door, follow the brook towards Darlands Lake and feel as though you have left the city behind within minutes; it is also a fine traffic-free cycle route that runs a surprising distance towards High Barnet. West Finchley Underground is around a ten-minute walk, and once you're on the Northern line, King's Cross is only 20 to 25 minutes away, so central London genuinely feels very accessible - near enough for older children to get themselves into town to meet friends. The 326 stops about five minutes away on Nether Street, and the M1 is roughly five minutes by car, which matters if you regularly head north. There are no residents' parking restrictions on the street, which makes life easier when people visit.

For a family, the everyday things fall into place. Moss Hall Primary is within walking distance, Finchley Lawn Tennis Club on Brent Way is around the corner, and there is swimming at Copthall and padel on Summers Lane too. Coffee is easy, whether that's Vero Caffe, Bluebelles of Portobello, Kitchen Delight or Holybella, or tea and cake at Finchley Nurseries. There is the Bohemia and the Elephant Inn for a drink, the Iranian food shops that are such a feature of Finchley, Aldi for fruit and veg, Tesco on Ballards Lane for the bigger shop, and Nisa by West Finchley for the milk you've run out of at the wrong moment.

What the sellers will miss is not one thing but the sum of them: The peace and the light, waking to birds, the walks along the brook and the way it changes through the seasons, and the sheer ease of a life where so much is walkable or close by. Over the years, the street has had a friendly sense of community. The house has been a happy family home, and it still feels that way today
