Set within the popular Cambridgeshire village of Doddington, Nurses House is a spacious and particularly interesting three-bedroom home offering flexible accommodation, two reception rooms, additional home-working space, a garage, off-road parking, an enclosed garden and attractive farmland views.
But there's more to this house than its accommodation – even the name tells part of its story.
Nurses House is understood to have been built in the 1960s specifically to provide accommodation (and a surgery) for a local district nurse. Local historical records tell us that the property stands on the former site of The Brickmakers Arms, the public house which gave Brickmakers Arms Lane its name. Thought to have opened around 1838, the pub served this part of Doddington for more than a century before closing in 1950. The building was subsequently demolished in 1966, with new Police and District Nurses houses built on the site
The history of the immediate area stretches back further still, with brickmaking once an important feature of this part of Doddington. Brick pits were being dug here during the 19th century, with the nearby brickyard producing bricks from the local clay. Today, the name Brickmakers Arms Lane provides a lasting reminder of that part of the village's past.
Back to the house itself...
Step inside and the entrance hall provides a welcoming introduction, with stairs rising to the first floor and doors leading to the lounge, kitchen and versatile office/playroom.
The lounge is a comfortable main reception room featuring a fireplace with wood surround and fitted electric fire, complemented by wood-effect laminate flooring and a uPVC window to the front.
Across the hall is another particularly useful reception room. Currently used as a second sitting room, this versatile space could just as easily become a children's playroom, snug, hobby room or home office, depending on your requirements. Wood-effect laminate flooring continues through the room and there is a uPVC window to the front.
The kitchen is well equipped with a comprehensive range of base, drawer and wall-mounted cupboards, ample preparation surfaces and an inset stainless steel sink with mixer tap. There is space for a range of appliances together with a fitted stainless steel extractor hood, while tile-effect laminate flooring provides a practical finish.
An opening connects the kitchen with the adjoining dining area, creating a sociable layout with plenty of room for a dining table and chairs. UPVC sliding patio doors provide plenty of natural light and open directly onto the rear garden – ideal when entertaining during the warmer months.
The accommodation continues through to the rear hall, where the flooring flows through into a further office area and ground floor WC. For anyone regularly working from home, this additional office space is a real bonus and means you don't necessarily have to sacrifice one of the main reception rooms or bedrooms to create a dedicated workspace.
A door leads from here into the rear entrance lobby, which provides access to the garden and garage together with a useful storage area.
Head upstairs and the first-floor landing has a uPVC window to the side providing natural light, access to the loft space and doors leading to all three bedrooms and the family bathroom.
Bedroom one is a well-proportioned double bedroom with a uPVC window to the front enjoying attractive open views across the neighbouring farmland.
Bedroom two is another comfortable double bedroom, positioned at the rear and enjoying pleasant views over the garden and beyond.
Bedroom three is also a good size, with enough room to accommodate a double bed, and another uPVC window to the front taking advantage of those attractive farmland views.
The family bathroom is fitted with a white three-piece suite comprising a bath with folding shower screen and electric shower over, pedestal hand basin and low-level WC. A tiled floor provides a practical finish, complemented by a heated towel rail and uPVC window to the rear.
Outside
The front garden is laid to lawn and screened from the road by established laurel hedging, providing a pleasant degree of privacy. A driveway provides off-road parking and leads to the garage.
To the rear, the enclosed garden is predominantly laid to lawn, with established flower beds adding colour and interest. A concrete patio provides a useful space for garden furniture and outdoor entertaining or, alternatively, a ready-made base for a garden shed if required. Timber fencing encloses the garden and provides a private and secure outside space.
The location
Doddington is a popular and well-established Fenland village offering the combination of village life and convenient access to nearby towns.
The village has a good range of everyday facilities and a strong local community, including Lionel Walden Primary School, village shops, pubs, recreational facilities, playing fields and village amenities. The nearby market town of March provides a much wider selection of supermarkets, independent shops, restaurants, leisure facilities and a railway station with connections towards Peterborough, Cambridge and beyond.
For anyone interested in local history, the address itself provides an additional talking point. Brickmakers Arms Lane takes its name from the former public house and reflects an era when brickmaking formed part of Doddington's local industry.
And Nurses House has its own place within that history Rather than simply being a modern name given to an older property, it is understood to reflect the original purpose of the house, which was constructed as accommodation (and a surgery) for a district nurse when the former Brickmakers Arms site was redeveloped during the 1960s.
Today, it offers a very different purpose – a spacious and flexible family home with three good-sized bedrooms, two reception rooms, additional office space, garage and parking, an enclosed garden and open farmland views
A house with an interesting past, plenty of space for the present and lots of potential for its next owner.
Viewing is highly recommended.
