Historical Background
Believed to date from the early 19th century, this distinctive former chapel occupies a prominent roadside position at Zelah Lane, also historically known as Lane Chapel due to its location at the convergence of the main road and earlier trackways. Baptism records indicate that the building was functioning as a chapel by 1822, with seating for approximately 150 worshippers, highlighting its importance within the local religious community.

Whilst its original denomination has been the subject of historical discussion, documentary and cartographic evidence strongly associates the chapel with the Bible Christian movement. By the late 19th century, the chapel was clearly identified as a Bible Christian Chapel, appearing as such on maps dating from 1880 and referenced by Symons in 1884. Contemporary reports in the Royal Cornwall Gazette record regular services, musical performances and an active choir, reflecting the chapel's role as both a religious centre and an important social hub for the surrounding rural community.

The chapel formed part of the wider Methodist circuit network serving Cornwall. Following the 1907 amalgamation of the Bible Christians, Methodist New Connexion and United Methodist Free Churches, it became part of the United Methodist Church and later the Methodist Church of Great Britain in 1932. The chapel ultimately closed its doors in 1934, when its congregation joined the main Methodist church within Zelah village.

Constructed of traditional killas rubble stone with distinctive brick detailing and round-arched openings beneath a hipped scantle slate roof, the building represents a fine example of a simple yet characterful Cornish wayside chapel. The structure was later extended, likely to accommodate a Sunday school, further underlining its significance within the local community. Adding to its historic appeal, a Grade II listed milestone remains positioned against the boundary wall on the High Road, providing a tangible connection to Cornwall's historic transport network and enhancing the property's heritage credentials.

Planning records show that the building underwent a change of use from chapel to workshop in 1981 before eventually being sensitively converted into a private residence. Today, it stands as a remarkable and evocative home, offering a rare opportunity to own a unique piece of Cornwall's rich nonconformist heritage whilst enjoying all the comforts of modern living.

Zelah is a highly regarded and well-connected village situated approximately five miles from the cathedral city of Truro and enjoying excellent access to both the north and south Cornish coasts. Surrounded by rolling countryside, the village offers a wonderful balance of rural tranquillity and convenience. Local amenities include a popular village pub, village hall and community facilities, whilst nearby Truro provides an extensive range of shopping, leisure, educational and healthcare services.
The stunning beaches of Perranporth, Holywell Bay and Crantock are all within easy reach, providing some of Cornwall's most spectacular stretches of coastline. The nearby A30 offers excellent transport links across the county and beyond, making the property particularly appealing for commuters and those seeking a central Cornish base. Combining idyllic countryside surroundings with convenient access to Cornwall's major attractions, Zelah remains one of the county's most desirable village locations.
