Location – Saffron Walden
Saffron Walden is a historic market town in northwest Essex, situated approximately 15 miles south of the city of Cambridge and close to the Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire borders. Audley End railway station lies around 2 miles away, offering direct services to London Liverpool Street in approximately an hour, as well as connections to Cambridge. The M11 is within easy reach via junctions 8 and 9, and London Stansted Airport is around a 30-minute drive, making the town well placed for commuters and travellers alike.
The town is one of England's best-preserved medieval market towns, with hundreds of listed buildings, timber-framed houses and fine examples of pargeting, the decorative plasterwork the region is known for. At its centre stands St Mary's Church, one of the largest parish churches in Essex, with origins dating back to the 13th century and a striking spire visible across the town. Saffron Walden takes its name from the saffron crocus once cultivated in the surrounding fields, and its rich heritage is reflected in landmarks such as the famous turf maze on the common, the Victorian Bridge End Gardens, the ruins of Walden Castle, and the magnificent Jacobean Audley End House on the edge of town.
The town enjoys a thriving centre, with a twice-weekly market held in the market square on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Residents have access to a wide range of independent shops, boutiques, cafés, restaurants and pubs, alongside familiar high-street names, supermarkets, doctors' and dentists' surgeries, a library, a museum and a leisure centre. Saffron Screen is a wonderful addition to the town: An independent, non-profit cinema with an intimate 202-seat auditorium. Saffron Hall, an acclaimed concert and performance venue draws visitors from across the region.
There is a strong sense of community, with numerous clubs, societies and sporting facilities, including golf, cricket and tennis, as well as plenty of countryside walks through the surrounding Uttlesford landscape. Families are well served by highly regarded schools, including the respected Saffron Walden County High School and a choice of primary schools in and around the town.
If you're looking to purchase in the area, we highly recommend giving this characterful market town a visit!
